Quickjack Engine Drop
 

Did an engine drop today to begin some fun projects... elephant racing rear coilover swap and xfaktory + Rasant itb efi conversion. I wanted to provide some tips for those quickjack users. Be wary of the transmission shift rod, compared to the normal engine drop, it was trickier to get the clearance. Only other tip is I had to remove the rear bumper and the injectors for hard line clearance above the fuel distributor plus the intake boot, obviously for cis. We were at dinner after the drop and I said “next house we need a bigger garage”. My sister said “or you could get rid of stuff”. We looked at her like she had three heads...

How did you like the quickjacks otherwise? Easy to maneuver and store? Do you have fine height control so you can maneuver the shift rod etc?

I see tools, a pedal bike, and 2 motorbikes. You need all that stuff so you are absolutely right. Need a bigger garage! :D

Great pic and congrats on the engine drop. I’m getting ready to install 3.2 also have the bumper off using my Quickjack. I’m guessing with bumper off it should be high enough to install.

Quickjacks have safety stops at two positions. I would never get under without that engaged, and the instructions are explicit about not stopping the lift part way.

You will need another jack to place under the engine/transmission to lower it out.

I use my Turbo tail as a work bench all the time. With the cover on of course.:D

Ace thread! Happy QJ owner here...but haven’t tackled an engine drop yet.

I have had the Quickjack for about a year and used it on the SC, 996 turbo, and a friends s5. Storage is super easy as you push them together and drive over. Overall for the price point and space requirements, I think it’s a great buy. Obviously it would be nice if you could do a motor drop without removing the bumper but that is really a special situation. The newer cars are a little more convenient since they have designed jack points for lifts. Only suggestion is to buy hockey pucks and pinch weld jack pads so you have a bunch of options for lifting.

Other tip I forgot to mention about the engine and trans removal... I had a smaller jack facing the rear of the car so I could manipulate the jacking mechanism from the back then transferred to a furniture dolly. I had to do this because you couldn’t reach through the Quickjack when you were doing the initial drop. So I lowered the engine trans then proceeded to lift the chassis with the Quickjack.

I use the top of the washer & drier cause my bench looks like that 90% of the time. well actually it's a 100% currently as I am readying my house for sale with painting and junk. ive got tools spread out all over the house and only find what im looking for after needing it and it going unfound.


to the appliance work space annals. my washer lid has a convex arch to it that can be bowed down with light force with it staying loaded like a pop goes the weasel waiting to spring. it only took like 20x of it "weaseling" sending small junk I had on it all over the garage before I made sure to unload it immediately upon it going into the "ready weasel spring" mode while working atop it.

So fired up to see that photo! Fortunately, it's not 'too' much trouble to remove those things for clearance. On my 914-6 we removed carbs and exhaust, so not an issue.

Plus, the dang Quick Jack is fast, safe, reliable, stores easily. Good for you, enjoy the next phase of your project!

The reason I'm such a Porsche fanatic is because my father did things like this with me. Keep it up and pass the passion on! Love this!
