Air filter/ intake question

Greetings. I purschased a 1988 Carrera which seems to be missing the air intake “trumpet” that appears to attach to the air filter housing. See photo of the piece I’m looking for. Does anyone know where I can find this piece. I’ve looked on Pelican, eBay and used parts sites with no luck. How important is it that I find the replacement! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1543463345.jpg

Thanks!
Ruxin

Side question: Are there 4 clips in the air box, or 3 (2 in front, one on rear/top)?

Others more versed can chime in and give more educated response, but my understanding is the snorkel is trying to gulp somewhat cooler, more direct air than without it.

However, the exalted 993 did away with the snorkel and if you ordered the 'sound package' option, you got a nifty chrome surround but more importantly the entire right side of the airbox was opened up.

Knowing this, I bought a separate lid/snorkel for my 3.2 on ebay and opened the entire side, epoxied mesh, deleted the snorkel. Have had no adverse effects, and yes, it does sound better. So that's an option. (I saved my original lid and snorkel if I ever get all nostalgic.)

You can find the snorkels, so just 'save' a search on eBay, check with various Porsche dismantlers or a 'wanted' ad here plus other Porsche forums. One will show up if you're diligent. But you're not going to ruin your car without it.

Yes there are 4, and you'll have to flatten your hand like Elasto-Man to reach that stupid bottom rear one. Those regularly remain unclipped or partially clipped, which if forced can break them so be careful back there.

Also know that there's a small vacuum tube on the back that is easily overlooked. Well, you can't see it, but you can feel it and/or the nipple it is supposed to mate to. This is on my '85, so I am not positive on the other years. Some smart Pelican here has a vacuum diagram or you can search.

Once you do your airbox lid a few upteen dozen times, it gets easier, but you still wonder how they ever expected an adult hand to do this without pain.

(SNIP)

Kudos on a thorough response.

The air box is available new from Porshe at a fairly reasonable price (for an OEM part) it even comes with a new air filter. However, it does not include the trumpet, which is NLA new. So, you're in search mode.

I run an air box top that has been opened, but still retains the trumpet. Unless you look from the top of the right fender, you can't tell the piece has been modified. My other 3.2 runs a Sal Carceller MAF + cone filter. Infinitely easier access.

Give yourself some more space in there and get an intake like mine. It's really nice to not have that in the way in case I'm searching for an oil leak or something else. It's just a flange and K&N filter. I think Vertex Auto sells one. Mine is home made.

Would using a filter like that alter the air intake pressure requiring you to adjust idle speed or (God forbid) MAF sensor adjustment?

If it is the same as on my 87, which it does look that way it will have 4 clips. 2 on the back side, 2 on the front side.

I had zero change from installing this filter on my 87 3.2. Some said you would hear more intake noise but I couldn't tell a difference over the louder MK exhaust that I have. Also did not notice any idle issues or performance gains/losses.

1988 had four latches on original housing. A pain to get to the rear two, but can be done. I have used a strong nylon cord looped through the rear latches and then pulled them closed from around the housing and reached around to remove the cord after done. Replacement probably can be sourced from OEM channels or like Stoddard, but also used assembly from parts houses like DC Automotive, AASE, Parts Heaven, Weekend Rides, etc.

Pretty sure I have a snorkel. Will have to look.

Thanks for all the information and reply’s. AHudson- you mentioned a vacuum hose that attaches to the air filter box. When I changed the air filter I noticed a hose that was not connected to anything. Could this be the piece? I’ve only had the car a few weeks and a newly but perhaps the P.O. never reconnected. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1543522699.jpg

^^^Yup. That's it.

The 964 has a similar airbox/air filter setup to the 3.2 Carrera. In Adrian Streather's book "The Porsche 911 (964) Enthusiast's Companion", there is a comparison of aftermarket air filters complete with dyno results. Surprisingly, an unaltered factory airbox surpassed all the aftermarket products! So, I have kept the factory filters on both my cars.

The original airbox provides a cold-air-intake that is destroyed when the filter is bare on the engine bay.

That snorkel is not sold separately.
I'm sure you're find without it

Rawknees'Turbo 11-29-2018 04:08 PM

The sole purpose of that snorkel is to reduce intake noise in order to comply with various market noise regulations - nothing more.

That can't be it. If it is, explain this extra long appendage  on this 67.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1391311775.jpg

I say it's for airflow and to prevent water intrusion.

Rawknees'Turbo 11-29-2018 04:59 PM

^^^

Same purpose - noise reduction. I've seen this documented, but can't seem to find the source now.

Snitzler 11-30-2018 04:31 PM

I did this, very easy to get at the rear clips. Huge weight savings and tons of extra horsepower. Actually maybe a little bit more intake noise and nothing more. I too have an M&K exhaust. Getting rid of the horn cleans up the engine on the right side a bit.
