Paint questions ?
I purchased a 76 911S recently..a few questions. The engine has been rebuilt in the last 3 years. I like the color and from a distance the paint looks decent.
I would like to repaint. I am not a mechanic and do not have a garage capable of doing much more than minor items. I have been looking for this cars equivalent for years and I do not see myself selling it in the foreseeable future. This car will get years and years of enjoyment and TLC. Questions: I notice from reading the forums that I should paint first? then do other mods? I should replace all the rubber at the same time I paint? I had planned to.. I am looking at the 2020 Porsche colors online and I like the metalic paints. Should I paint as original or would it be kosher to use a new Porsche 2020 Dolomite Silver Metallic? Would it be sacrilege to put a big fat black or blue stripe down the middle and switch to the Porsche 2020 Agate Grey Metallic? or just a matter of taste? What should I expect in $ cost and time to do the job when I speak to shops? I do plan to replace some interior that has seen better days. Maybe a total replacement..money is a factor. I do not have the funds to restore to perfection all at once..I will enjoy the process. I can do minor fixes and alterations myself. Should I replace the interior before or after? The door panels are a bit rough. The handles on the windows need to be replaced. A local shop told me to save the paint until last? Couple of close photos for reference attached. I have spent a few hours detailing and waxing this is after. Thanks Much for the feedback! I am glad to be here as I have been lurking the forums for a while and I welcome any tips. If I post in the wrong area, have too many questions in one thread or if I need to do more research on my own before I throw out to the group let me know. Thanks ! ![]() ![]() |

I would try a professional detail shop that knows Porsches and get the paint corrected. Then ask them for a vynil stripe shop to put a vynil stripe on it. Original paint is desirable and a vynil stripe can be removed.
My opinion on what I would do if I wanted nicer paint and a stripe. Added bonus car will only be worth more with corrected paint and the stripe can be removed. Cheers! |

Is that original paint? If so, I would try to save it. If not, I would still try to save it, but it is your car and I assume you have the $$$$.

Thanks much for the feedback. I have a feeling that is a debate as old as time here. repaint or leave as original? I have that debate internally. When I think of what I could do to the car for 20-30k instead of paint. That money $ would go a long way.
Is it possible to repair this or buff with out a repaint? There are many imperfections all over but from a distance not visible. ![]() ![]() I have a lead on a good vinyl wrap guy that is local. I do like the idea of trying a blue or black stripe instead of committing. |

![]() Get this from a good auto part store. Find a test spot, rub a quarter size amount on test spot with light to medium pressure. If it disappears or gets less noticeable, you can do a paint correction. If test spot stays the same.... paint job! |
