Radio Install (TR7412UB-OR Continental)
I'm doing an install of the TR7412UB Continental head unit and MB Quart speakers. No amp. Here is the pinout from the head unit.
![]() Speak wires are pretty straight forward. But I have two questions about connecting the yellow "power" wire and what "switched power" connections folks recommend. Also, did you install inline fuse for both yellow line and whatever switched power line you selected? Last question is about illumination. I have heard folks using the power to the ashtray light. Where is it best to tie into? The blue/black line that runs with the yellow line? ![]() Here's a red/white that comes from ignition ![]() |

Yes, you are going to want to install both the yellow POWER wire and the "switched power" in your stereo. The constant power will feed your radio at all times (this powers your radio clock and other low-power features that require constant power). The "switched power" only delivers power when your key is on at least ACC, or if the engine is running. This prevents your radio from being turned (or left on) when your key is not in the ignition. Thus, this is an important wire.
On my 1986, the ignition wire (otherwise referred to as ACC or "switched power") is red and was in the same bundle as the speaker wires behind the stereo. You're going to want to plug that one into the A4 "ignition" slot in your Continental. I couldn't find an Illumination wire on my car. That just means it will run on full-brightness while the display is on. I don't think that's too much of a problem considering that the radio light isn't too offensive. I will take a peak at the ashtray wires, splicing from there sounds like a clever idea!

Very helpful. The yellow wire I've located easily, but there was no "switched power" or radio bundle to easily identify red wire, so I'm trying to find the appropriate one to use. I think I will use the red/white one if it checks out.
Is the appropriate way to check to use a multitester to determine the current when ignition is in the off position and when it is in the ACC position? Did you plan to run fuses with your setup? Thanks again. |

I can't speak to the red/white wire one you found.
You said you located the speaker wires. On my car, the speaker wires all came from the same black hose. In that hose, there was also a red ignition wire. I would follow your speaker wires back and see if they come from the same black hose and if they have a red-wire neighbor as well. I suppose you could check and see if your red/white wire is an ignition wire. Check for power with the key off (should have no power). Then check for power when the key is on ACC (you should get power). That's speculation though.

Much obliged. I'll pull speakers and trace wires to make sure I have searched all avenues before tapping into something else.

Finished install
Finished up install . . well, sort of. I found switched power source (the red/white I referred to earlier does the trick). My antennae hasn't been used in like 31 and a quarter years, so I'll have to figure out that one (maybe there is an alternative antennae?). So radio FM doesn't really "work."
But more immediately the BT isn't coming up as an option when I click on SRC. Now, I did not install the SWRC GND and SWRC+ plug that goes into C 1-6. But did plug in the mic. No idea what the SWRC stands for... Once I figure that out, I reckon I'll be just about done. |

I have the same radio, and I don't remember setting up Bluetooth. I just go on my phone and connect to that BT, and then the SRC button will show BT, but not until. Maybe you need to pair it the first time with a code, don't remember...
Do you see the TR7412UB-OR listed in your available BT connections in your phone?

you need to pair the phone and the radio first. On some of these radios it is a long press of the green phone button

Silly me. That was far easier than I suspected. Just got the order of operations wrong. The only thing I need to fine tune is the mic -- I have a mic cover slotted through the EGR place with cover.

How's the sound quality and radio reception? This is about the only radio currently for sale that doesn't have a 'ricer' look and seems period correct for the 911s IMHO.

There are certainly car stereo experts, but I think this head unit doesn't have pre-amp capability. I have a simple setup with just two front MB Quart speakers, nothing in the rear. I'm sure others have more sophisticated setups that might want to chime in. |

Just installed this headunit this past week. Tito is correct that this unit does not have pre-amp outputs (or any options that I could find to play with fader/balance).
I used a line-out converter to hook up the headunit to an amp. Amp drives a pair of component speakers and 4x6s in the back. I'm no audiophile, but the sound is great. My set-up lacks true sub-woofer lows, but I wasn't exactly pining for a club on wheels anyway.

It does have a fader & balance adjustment, check the user manual. I remember it was difficult to locate it in the menu but it is there.

SWRC stands for Steering Wheel Remote Control. Therefore it can be safely ignored.
