I get the longing for modern stuff in the car you love. But then you remove the gauges, then add other modern touches. Pretty soon you have a Frankenstein car which doesn’t know what it is. It never works exactly right because that stuff takes bulk hours to get right. Then you get sick of it and go to sell. The first person who looks at it offers a price which factors in them removing all your diy electronics and stuff and sourcing original bits. So all those hours are not valued by anyone else and it never turned out as cool as you thought it would.

It’s like that Boxster to 356 conversion. Had the 356 look - kind of. Drove like a modern Boxster. In the end, what was the point? It was like a spicy curry with all the spice taken out. Nostalgia is what drives a big part of the hobby. Nostalgia applied in a haphazard manner gets diluted down quickly.

People who make their cars more difficult to use are the admired ones. Cranky exhausts, wide tyres, stiff suspension - that’s what people do. That’s the cars people want. Because modern cars and conveniences are but a click away.

Even the most expensive of restorations or restomods are analog in display. This would not be a popular upgrade.
I'd guess that if someone wanted all digital in a Porsche they'd just get or have already bought a new Porsche. Lots of tech there.
My car has some heated seat pads installed in the seats.......and efi.

A good friend of mine stated other than with health, there is no problem that cannot be solved by throwing enough money at it.

if the OP wants a resto-mod or all the modern conveniences, like I have read so many times before, 'do whatever makes you happy" it's your car.

My big modern upgrades to the interior include LED lighting behind the gauges (which I can now see), a radio with Bluetooth, and OMG a USB port. I am sure the original purists are clutching their chests in agony at the thought.

Cool, which EFI did you retrofit (or have retrofitted)? Does it require little maintenance or like some other responder posted, (paraphrasing) "globs of ending time to maintain such retrofits"?

I suspect it's the former.

I have EFI in both my cars.
Its endless fiddling to get perfect or no fiddling if you get it done professionally and accept that its not going to be perfect.
Its not a coincidence that costs millions and take thousands of hours for a manufacturer to fine tune engines.
Saying that, it is preferable over carbs any day of the week.

I like my analogue gauges, perhaps I would like the internals exchanged for something modern to get them a bit more precise.
I have thought about changing out the clock for something more useful, maybe a display for the EFI. But a small android tablet could be placed somewhere hidden to show stuff from the EFI.

Both modern and a analog. Options and programmability. Could switch to navigation, or track modes. Back up camera. All centered in front of the driver in their field of view.

Center tach has the right look to anchor the whole thing in the past and present.

Obviously Porsche understands the look.

Maybe with additive manufacturing this is really not too expensive to do.

Could be a dash panel with the central tach, and two flat screens on each side with what ever gages you want to display.

Just cut the current dash panel to fit the large plastic insert with the gages and flat panels.

Running a digital display through an EFI system such as racecars run is easy enough but I don't think that's what you're after. The LED screen size whether it be a 5" round display (tach) or a long display to encompass all gauges a la factory albeit digital, does not exist.

I made a bracket to mount a 7" tablet on the steering wheel.

The screen is configurable, similar to the photo.

The tablet interfaces the Megasquirt 3 Pro over bluetooth. Using a bluetooth adapter with the Megasquirt.

Looks a little goofy, but sometimes better than carrying a laptop.

Be sure to lock the screen auto-rotate on the tablet, or else it spins the screen when you turn the wheel!

Interesting that the tablet can interface the Megasquirt and the 10Hz GPS, both over bluetooth, at the same time.

Only thing I want is a small display I can build into one of the gauges that lets me toggle between AFR and fuel consumption (liter/100km ideally), maybe one or two other engine parameters like knock events.

It'd need to be tiny, say 1cm x 2cm....sigh. Just need the pockets to get something like that custom built.

Hey, it is your car do to it whatever makes you happy. I would suggest you keep all the old parts so the next owner can put it back to original.

Like most in the thread, I think it is a silly idea. My wife has a 2017 Macan. It looks like a spaceship on the instruments. It is cool to be able to change the display with a thumb wheel on the steering wheel. Show my phones display on the main display and other talk to Siri right through the car. None of that is what I want in a 911.

But like I said, it is your car, do what makes you happy.

I'd write an app for an Iwatch, or similar device.

Have it connect to the ecu wireless.

Mount it on the dash if desired.

Anyone who has ever tried to write an app to show live data knows how much is involved. Look at the work that went into discsevns arduino Ac control - a single function. The amount of work for an audience of one is insane. It’s like writing a video game to professional standard that only you will play. Possible but a huge time sink.

There is nothing wrong with a standard Porsche 911 dash. In fact it is a time honoured design that millions of people love.

It could be done and if you used a vintage green theme it may work well.

I always thought a restomod aircooled 911 would be very cool.

Oh, and for the others who are conflating this post to my other post on retrofit airbags, and further assert that retrofit airbags can't be done in any practical fashion and are illogical, why do you suppose in your wisdom that they are more dangerous in a car than in aircraft? Aviation airbags are built into the belt, and for a complete system are $2800 or so I believe with belt pretensioners, etc., (in Year 2019 dollars for those reading this in future years). The bag inflates AWAY from the seat and toward the instrument panel. Please illuminate for the benefit of everyone why you'd be a naysayer about this for road and track vehicular use.
