Painting engine tins

I removed my spark plug wires and spark plugs and in the process the engine tins as part of my job ignition maintenance job.

The formally satin black engine tins look tired on the side that faces the wheel well.

Anyone have experience rattle canning them black and have it last?

Or do I need to shoot some 2k high temp black or powder coat them?

Thanks

Done both rattle can and powder coat. By far powder coat is the best and longest lasting.

The tins should be stripped and passivated prior to powdercoating.

I did the rattle can and I was disappointed. Paint failed easily. Chipping and flaking after two years. .

I did a rebuild, stripped the paint and used 2k semigloss black. Much better two years on.

Powder coat is probably the best. But I have not tried it yet.

Powder coat, local shop charged me $10 per piece. Best $50 bucks I spent

Just googled passivate. It appears to relate to stainless steel.

Pretty sure engine tin is mild steel.

Been wrong before, though.

Thank you all. I have never done prep for powder coating. Do I need to put some paint stripper on them and bring them bare metal pieces? Or just cleaned painted pieces and the powder coater figures out the rest?

Powder coat people will strip and coat. Should be $100-200 for all the parts.

+1

Boutique like shops will be a touch more expensive.

I say splurge on engine tin you can see.

You will not be disappointed.

I once got about 50 pieces done for $175. Then they realized I was getting Porsche parts done. Price doubled each time I went back. We got a setup for the shop since besides the price, time went from a week or 2 to a month +++. It’s great to have it in house but blasting the larger parts takes some time. It was nice to be able to drop off ugly rusty parts and pick up new looking ones.

Have you guys been able to remove the tin with the engine still in (not including the cylinder air guides)?

I have always installed the tins on my 81 after the engine was re-installed. (Meaning they can come off)

Only thing I don't remember is if the installed muffler is in the way. Always installed that last.

Thank you guys.

My tins cleaned up decently on the engine side. Once I drop the engine I will take your advice and get the rest of the tins all powder coated together.
