im looking at a 1980 3.0 sc and im wondering if it is the 180 bhp or the 204 bhp. can anyone enlighten me? were they making a 204 bhp in 1980? whats the difference internally? is it a straight forward job to make a 204 from a 180?
thanks Andy D. |

all US spec cars are 180hp even though they went to higher compression ratio in '80. The Euro cars had the hp increase though...

I have been reading Randy Leffingwell's "Porsche 911 - Buyer's Guide", who says that the Canadian & Japaneses cars also got the 'euro' higher horsepower.
Can anyone confirm that? |

180 or 188, but not 204
Someone correct me if I'm wrong: but I think in 1980, the SC was either 180 or 188. 204 didn't come around until about 1983.
Is it a straightforward modification to go from 180 to 204? I don't know about Euro cars, but for US cars the engine has to be cracked and different pistons and cylinders installed. There should probably be some work done on the injection and the fuel distributor. Head work could be a possibility too, though I'm not sure. Exhaust might also need modifications. I think you'd have to do everything but the exhaust for Euro 180 hp SC engines, unless you have cats on it.

A 1980 euro model SC has 188HP. 1981 and on models have 204.
78 & 79 have 180. |

Euro 204hp models have a little turn signal behind the front wheel - in the wing/fender.

Yes, if it is Jan-Sep 1980. it will have the lower compression 188bhp engine, which is I believe no different to the earlier 180bhp rated unit. It was re-rated that year because the figure was unduly pessimistic (typical Porsche) for the earlier cars. The 204bhp engine was used from Oct 1980 onwards, for the '81 model year.
Obtaining the additional power would involve rebuilding the engine with different, high compression p/c's, so rather an expensive 16bhp! Don't worry too much about the difference, better a low compression motor (and car) in good condition than a high compression one in poor condition....

Why not post the engine number?

Porsche was concerned about competition between the water- and air-cooled cars and so dumbed down the 78/9 figures of the SC. They later raised them as mentioned above.
