anyone have any ideas why the hazard light switch activates my ignition (dash lights and fuel pump sound) even when the key is not in the ignition? faulty switch perhaps?

There can only be one answer - incorrect wiring connections at the hazard switch, the ignition switch, or the fuse panel. I'd review every wire connection, starting at the fuse panel and then the ignition switch. You'll need a wiring diagram for your year and model to verify the correct wire routing. A faulty hazard light switch itself wouldn't cause current to be sent to the ignition switch, but faulty wiring certainly could.
