Has this happened to you?

Pulled my SC out of the garage this morning so the plumber could work on my tankless W/H without dropping anything on it and the driver's side mirror glass fell out of the mirror housing and cracked on the concrete driveway. I guess after 35 years, it'd finally had enough. Our host was kind enough to sell me a replacement glass (will be here on the 17th).Man, Porsche is REALLY proud of these replacement mirrors. I'm now waiting for the passenger side to commit suicide.

Happened before on my 944.

Seeing as they both have flag mirrors, maybe the 944 glass fits the 911 mirrors? Can probably find one used.

Weird, I had a motorcyclist hit my flag mirror with his knee while splitting lanes and he knocked the glass out. Mine had a tether soldered to the back, not sure if it is factory or not but saved the glass from impacting the ground and shattering.

My story is way worse... (This happened just after my separation and divorce more than 15 years ago)

I was lowering the jack my SC was on, twisted the handle of the jack a bit to much and it dropped fast.
The drivers side mirror hit my shoulder on the way down. The mirror base tag broke. My shoulder was OK after icing and few beers.

I fixed it by drilling into the nub that was left and tapped an M4 thread and then used a bolt to make a new tab.

The tab circled in black broke. (This is a 964 base, The tabs are very similar to my SC)

The mirror glass (with the three tabs for mounting in the adjustment "housing" (which preclude you from going down to the local glass shop. . .) are $114.00 from our host. Initially thought I'd just have a mirror cut to size and JB Weld it in place. That would be a recipe for disaster. . .

In retrospect, my mirror leaping to its death is nothing. Hope everything is good now; you know the passage of time, etc.

Thanks for your concern. It was tough at the time. Long story short I ended up raising my 3 kids on my own. (My mother and family helped a lot)

I still have the SC, things are good now and that bolt is still doings its job.

Yeah, my wing mirror fell off my '88 3.2 while driving. I pulled over, looked around for it and threw it in the car. I just used some glazing silicone and stuck it back on. It was weird, I wasn't going fast, nor was I on a bumpy road. I guess the original adhesive just got tired.

Update: When I placed my order (yesterday, January 11), the delivery date for the mirror was January 17. The mirror was delivered TODAY, January 12. Our host has outdone themselves yet again. I am in awe of how your organization works. Congratulations, and you have a customer for life. Now, before you get all giddy, I'm an old man (> 60yo), so don't think you're going to be seeing me every week. . .

Not sure if the flag mirrors on an SC are the same as my 87. Both of my original mirrors have fallen off and it is a known problem. The first one fell off during my test drive!

The mirror glass appears to be attached with a rubber looking layer on the plastic of the mirror unit. Over time it detaches from the glass and it just falls off. I have heard of people just getting a piece of mirror cut at a glass shop and gluing it on the backing plate. Mine fell off 15+ years ago so a whole replacement mirror was pretty cheap but the cost may have risen to the point where a cut mirror is an easy cheap fix.

There are two types: the SC has three body mounting clips that are backed with an aluminum (guess) backing plate and the later version with the rubber circular mount. Mine had the clips.

Looked at doing exactly what you suggested and JB welding the mirror in place. Given that I trust JB weld in this situation as far as I can throw it, I went with factory stock and it fit perfectly immediately and the problem went into the past.
