Mystery distributor - Bosch

I can't find any reference on this distributor - can anyone help? I was hoping to use this in my 2.7, but may have read the numbers wrong.

The Bosch number stamped in the housing is 0 231 169 008. Yes, not a 5 or a 9, but an 8. Anyone have any clues?

Thanks!

Hi Ray:
it looks like a Late '73 2.4T by my records.

Regards,

The 73 T takes a 911.602.031.06 which is a Bosch 0 231 184 004. Does this match your records? If so, we still have a mystery.

Andrew - what source did you refer to? Maybe there is a clue in there somewhere.

The following data is from the spec books and factory service manuals:

All '72 models, and some early '73 models used:

2.4 T --> Bosch 0.231.169.003 -- 6500 rpm rev limiter
2.4 E --> Bosch 0.231.169.004 -- 7100 rpm rev limiyrt
2.4 S --> Bosch 0.231.169.005 -- 7300 rpm rev limiter

Using 'mirror image points' ... later '73 models used:

2.4 T --> Bosch 0.231.169.008 -- 6500 rpm rev limiter
2.4 E --> Bosch 0.231.169.009 -- 7100 rpm rev limiter
2.4 S --> Bosch 0.231.169.010 -- 7300 rpm rev limiter

1974 model CIS 2.7 engines used the '73 T distributor ... subsequently replaced by Bosch 0.231.184.002 -- 6500 rpm rev limiter

1973 RS 2.7 engines used Bosch 0.231.169.011 -- 7300 rpm rev limiter dist. with quicker advance curve and more initial advance setting, later replaced with Bosch 0.231.184.004 -- 7300 rpm rev limiter ... used 'mirror-image points' with respect to the '73 models!!!

Hmmm, now I'm puzzled...I got the oo5 number directly from my old '72S original distributor. The oo4 number from the box it is in, which used to contain the replacement '73RS distributer Rothsport put in. The curve feels VERY right with the 004 in place...for an S, that is...Jeff Gamroth told me it was a new distributor for a '73 2.7 RS...The porsche part number on the box is 911 602 031-FX.

Paul,

That is the last, updated Bosch production model for the 911/83 engine, but it wasn't used in the '73 RS models ... just later production in ROW 2.7 Carrera cars.

I have the same model, which I got from PMO in the late '80s.

Warren - that looks like the right one. I just checked, and yes, this has the reverse, or "mirror image" points. The rev limiter is in the rotor, correct? So the difference between the 8, 9 and 10 suffix is dependent only on which rotor is installed?

Warren, while the books are open, do you show the part numbers for the points and rotor?

Ray,

The 7300 rpm rotor for '73 and later '169' and '184' series distributors is Bosch 1.234.332.206

The points for the '169' series distributors are Bosch 1.237.013.062

Yes, the only difference between the 008, 009, and 010 distributors was which rotor it was was equipped with! Any will work on a 2.7 engine, though an RS 2.7 had a more aggressive advance curve, and would work best with the 0.231.184.004 distributor!

Excellent! Thank you all for your help on this.

It is a good-news, bad-news situation. Now I know exactly what it is (good news) and know that I can't use it (bad news). Guess I will rebuild the one that's already in my 2.7.

Warren - thanks for the detail!
