heat from muffler ever cause any problems?
I fab'd up a new exhaust to pair with my B&B headers. I used a dynomax 17231 and some stainless ubends and with a little welding here and there, i have an agressive, and almost too loud system. But we'll have to drive it some more before we make a final judgement on the sound.
However, I have my muffler tucked up pretty close to the engine tin. Its not touching but is about an inch away. the muffler isn't touching anything else either but I can't help but feel like the heat it produces is bad news for the rear bumper and red reflector and everything else back there. has anyone had any issues with melting or even worse, fire from their muffler? Any common solutions like heat tape or something?

I don't have headers but similar muffler set up as you. It's been that way for 5+ years with no ill effects..

I think an inch would be plenty of room. I suppose melting the paint could theoretically happen if it got too hot, but if you're really concerned you could by a flexible heat shield like this one I got from either Summit Racing or Patrick Motorsports (can't remember which). It's peel and stick and goes on the inside of the bumper or other surface close to the exhaust.

No. Not hot enough to bother metal. Plastic and rubber, yes. Metal....no.

The heat from the muffler does degrade the rubber seal that straddles the engine tin at the perimeter of the engine bay. On the 930s, the outer section of the seal is cut out above the turbo-charger due to the extensive heat.

but if the muffler case cracks ....
happened to my project car, that is how I got it. muffler case cracked and the exhaust burned through the rubber seal and burned up some of the engine bay wiring before it stopped running. after some preliminary investigation decided to do a full restoration. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Don't do what I did. I bought some dynamat at an electronics store to peel and stick to the rear inside bumper sheet metal and drape over to the engine tin. The salesman said 'sure - heat - no problem'. Worked fine till the rubber inside the black foil melted down unto the muffler. Also, if you do an engine drop, you must slit the mat between the sheet metal and the tins. I'll probably do the Summit racing mat next. Bill K

it definitely leads to deterioration of the center reflector and tasil light lenses, especially on 964/993
