Unhappy Lights out!

Aaaargh!

Fitted a new steering wheel to my car (72T) - I do not know if this is even related to the problem - now my hi/low beams do not work. Hi beams on flash work fine, just kind of tricky driving whilst permanently holding the left stalk back... none too considerate to other drivers either.

Any ideas? I have checked the fuses, the side lights work fine when I pull the light switch on - just no headlights, all other electrics fine. Never had a problem before...

Advice gratefully received before I head to the local mechanic.

If it was the hi/low relay would the hi-beam flasher still work when the left stalk is pulled back?

its hard to tell the mechanicals of the stalk switch from the diagrams , but the relay ( 50 ) looks like terminal 30 would be 'cold' for both the highs and lows to be dead. make sure you have heat/12v comming out of terminal 30 of the headlight switch also.)

when you 'flash to pass' terminal 56b on the stalk switch, hots the high beams. don't shoot me if i got highs and lows reversed from the diagram. i assumed yellow was high beam.

Thanks for your help Tryan,

Spent a couple of hours removing the wheel, both stalks, left knee pad, hazard switch and the light switch itself. Checked all of the wire and connectors (tightened a few), swapped a couple of relays around to check they weren't duff (and duly smacked them as advised!) , scratched my head whilst trying to decipher wiring diagram, tried lights and voila! Working! Though I do now appear to have left low beam out - perhaps a short somewhere?

Thanks again - just out of interest, what ignition system are you running? Looking to upgrade but everyone has different advice...

swap headlights. it might just be a bulb or a fuse.

just stock points with a spare set in the glove box. i got stranded on the lake one time with an electronic conversion. good ol' points are fine for me.
