aluminum seats

Picked up an inexpensive (as if there is such a thing!) daily driver SC a few weeks ago and am slowly getting it back on the road. It is far from a pristine car so no harm in making it my own.

Priced "nice" seats and was blown away by current cost. There are 101 other things this car needs first.

Decided to build some "bomber" aluminum seats from various pictures I found online. Built to fit my 6'4" frame, they are super comfortable. Relatively low cost as it is just sheet aluminum and some filler rod.

Anyone do something similar? Looking for upholstery inspiration that doesn't look 1950's lake bed racer. Might paint them body color, or powdercoat black?

I welcome any photos, thoughts, opinions, or just being called an idiot. I kinda like the look but think something is missing and need help.

Vin

Looks great to me as-is. I admire your fab skills.

Nice work there, you could have covers made with padding that slips over the perimiter.

I like the look. Fits the vibe of the car.

Me offering my opinion on any additional finish to someone that has these kinda design and fab skills seems absurd. Very nice work.

I feel the same way, those look fantastic.
I would go to an upholstery shop and see what they can do..

I was looking for advice not compliments!

Will see what my local upholstery shop can suggest but they seem to deal mostly with 50’s era muscle cars so I’m fearful they might not be the most cutting edge.

Thanks and suggestions still welcome

Hi I'm from UK and love your seats and am planning similar.
I have found these but could also be covered in a tartan or color cloth but could give you and idea to make your own...https://www.sportseats4u.co.uk/product-category/racing-seat-harness-roll-cages-brands/reverie-carbon-seats/reverie-seat-cushion-sets/
Double sided velcro stitched to covers would work well on alu??

I think powder coating black will lessen the lake bed racer look. Maybe padding where your butt sits, shoulder and hip/thigh bolsters, and along the spine up to a widened head pad while leaving the rest uncovered would look nice.

Stefan at GTS has deconstructed his seats leaving padding in specific areas for a similar look. I believe he did it with the Vallelunga.

Nice seats - you've got some serious fab skills. Couple of ideas:

- Powder coat black to take the shine off.

- Find an upholstery shop and have some alcantra-covered pads made. Velcro in place like on home-built aircraft.

Aluminum chair makes a nice platform for a driver side bead seat.
Cover it with fabric of your choice.
I've had 3 in different cars.
Best fitting seat you can make.

Buy a walking foot sewing machine and some full hides. Something like this?

Oh lord are those red Recaro's gorgeous.

My sewing skills maxed out hemming the occasional pair of pants.

If there was every a reason to learn however it would be those seats! Googling sewing machines right now

Thanks all for some incredible inspiration. I will paint one seat black and the other bodycolor to see which I like. Found an approachable shop local to me and with a pile of printouts from this thread I'll see if they take inspiration and can deliver.
