Another duck tail question

I’m just about to buy a Getty duck tail though I’ve seen these on eBay:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-911-Ducktail-Rear-Wing-Fiberglass-Spoiler-RS-Style-2-7-1972-73/262107690454?hash=item3d06d5f5d6
Just wondering if any one of the 91 sold to date was to anyone on here and what their opinion was to the quality. At $250 I’m guessing it leave something to be desired.

One of the comments was it was good enough for racing. Just wondering if I should give it a try or stick with a $750 Getty.

Thanks
Munky

Few dollars saved by buying off their own site Munk. PORSCHE 911 WHALE TAIL REAR WING FIBERGLASS SPOILER RS STYLE 2.7 1972-73 – KEBBUCK | Custom Auto Parts Fiberglass, Plastic, Rubber | GM, Ford, MOPAR

Thanks - a penny sales is a penny earned! :)

$140 to ship on eBay. So $390.00 total via that route. Wonder if you get a break on shipping via the direct link?

I wouldn't hesitate if this was for the track. For a street car I think I'm going to go with Getty. Though at 2 to 3 times more expensive it sure is tempting to go with the cheaper one.

You get what you pay for. I'd do Stratton again.

Thanks for taking the time to reply everyone.

Agree with the Stratton comment but it’s not going to be on a particularly ‘high end’ 911 :D

I have a new ally engine lid and this will just ring in the changes.

So no-one on here has had one? I will probably play safe and do as Duane suggests and go for a Getty. The Getty panels I’ve had to date seem reasonable. Just if the other duck was surprisingly good, I may have taken a chance. Just don’t want to do that blind.

Quick update for future ducktail investigators :)
I placed an order with Getty for the ducktail and they sent me a couple of photos of the tail being made.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1550333354.jpg

They are also very kindly guiding me through the fitting of a couple of other parts.

That looks great. Way better than the eBay duck.

Munky King 02-16-2019 01:23 PM

Thanks Duane.
Getty have been so kind and patient with me.
They are helping me with some other panel fitment. Would recommend them to anyone.
Great company to work with!

I installed a Getty right out of the box. I have a good eye and am a little picky. Was the Getty 100% perfect and true? No, but it was a GREAT 97%+ and to me not worth messing with.

Did you replace a whale tail? Did you have a front spoiler?

Munky King 02-17-2019 09:44 AM

The general recommendation is that if you have some sort of fin on the back, you should have a counter front spoiler to stop the front end getting too light at speed.

I’ve never tried a 911 that wasn’t balanced following this suggestion, so can’t speak to the ‘wisdom’.

That aside, it seems fairly intuitive.

I have a getty duck and the fitment is good, however these 911 tolerance are sorta all over the place. It may look good on that jig they have but that doesn't necessarily mean it will fit your 911 the same way. These old 911 were hand built for a reason.

Well the Getty is here and was really well packed. Wooden frame for protection all over the place in the pack and the lid screwed down into a part of the wooden framework.

I have yet to get it anywhere near a car, due to snow here in the Wild-mid-west!

I’ll snap a couple of pics soon.

From all the comments I’ve heard, I have to come to this conclusion:
Unless you do a Stratton, where your currently fitting engine lid is being used to make the ducktail, there is a fair probability that you MAY need some fettling - even if you buy a Stratton (that uses something other than your existing deck lid) or Getty. This is because, even from the factory, these cars tolerances were far from ‘mm’ perfect.

With the better quality companies, you increase your chance that the tweaks needed (if any) will be minimal, as the lids are very close to where an original would be.

If you buy something unknown, then you really throw your dice as to whether you get lucky or not. The lid may be out and your car perfect, or both out.

I’ll update when I get mine somewhere near my car!

Munky King, did you ever get your duck? Do you have any pics to share as promised? I'm doing research as I am considering changing from my tea tray to a duck.
