901 output shaft seal
 

Changing the output shaft seals on my 901 transmission and trying to figure out how deep to drive the seal. The manual says to use tool P265b, I don’t know if this drives the seal flush or recesses and by how much. I have driven one flush but I am concerned it’s not deep enough and the rusty part of my drive shaft is in play. Also if someone has the torque value of the 19mm bolt when re-installing the drive shaft.

I'm not sure about type 901 transmissions and P265b. My experience with type 915 and other Porsche transmissions is that the special tool sets the seal to the correct depth.

If there is a groove worn by the old seal in the output stub axle, one option to consider is changing the new seal's installation depth just enough to get its lip to ride on un-grooved surface. Good luck!

Pretty sure you’re right that the tool sets the depth. Someone must know what that is, I’ll then set it manually.

A little bump, would really appreciate an answer if anyone knows.

Get it most of the way in and use the guide sleeve to pull it home as you tighten the nuts.

John, we must be talking about different things. I am changing the drive shaft seal on a 68 901 transmission. Can’t figure out the proper depth to set the seal as Porche controls it with P265B. My guess is it’s .050 to .075”.

Too early, no coffee. I just use the old seal upside down over the new one and a plastic hammer to set it just deep enough so the drive flange doesn't rub on it.
