original miles?
going through a box of old porsche parts I found this modded part - based on how rusty the part is I suspect it was a targa and the claimed miles were not quite accurate

ah, so you suspect the turned off the speedo signal with that rocker switch which would render the odometer static? how very slick!

I'd say that the only certainty that exists with any G body odometer is that the figure represents the absolute minimum number of miles on the chassis, inline switches notwithstanding. I wonder what the percentage of truly accurate readings is. Can't be very high.

Speedo's are so easy to switch on many cars built before Y2K. To me, condition is way more important than milage. I have a 40K mile east coast 914 that is in much rougher shape than my ~140K mile car that came from the west coast.

I have an 83 targa that shows 70k indicated. However, carfax shows that it failed California smog back in the 1990's with 290k on it so...
Fair point. Odometer failure is near 100% I've heard.

Who cares. At this point these cars are all 20-30-40-50+ years old. Condition is everything, indicated milage is basically nothing.
If you told me I had to drive across the country tomorrow and my choices were between an old 911 with 3,000mi or one with 300,000. I’d take the later every time.
