911SC wiring harness

While fiddling with my dash the other day I realized that my wiring has been molested by 2 POs (and me). Its also kind of brittle and corroded in spots.

My question is, what is the servicable life of the wiring in a 911?
Is there just one big harness or does it come in pieces?
Am I just overreacting to some messy splices or is there some point at which you just replace the whole shebang?

Has anyone replaced the whole thing or significant parts and what was your experience?

Thanks.

It comes in groupings or bundles which ever you want to call it. The will interconnect with male /female spade lugs. The interconnections could be for signals or ground connections. My harness is completely out of the car and sitting in a pile on a table. So I know for a fact there are 4 or 5 different parts.

i feel you can make permanent repairs with a soldering gun and dielectric impregnated shrink wrap.

butt connectors and electrical tape will get you to the house, but will fail eventually (and look ugly).

if you just have a few wires the need to be cleaned up, just fix it and make it neat for you and the next owner. if you have some major toast on your hands, source a replacement harness from a junk yard or blowsby on the 914 pp board might be able repair yours with color code intact for some monetary incentive.

a buddy is working on the ac in the 914 and left a 944 with the keys. i think its an 85 and 90% of the electricals don't work. the windows, the fan, most of the lights and the key function. everything esle is dead. i popped the cover off the fuse box and there are a few dead soldier loose in the trenches. sundays project.

There are around twenty sections to the wiring harness. To replace them all will add up to a significant sum of money. Life depends on the environment the section of harness experiences. After 20 years or so the sections on the engine are often in pretty grim condition from heat, hot oil and vibration. The sections in the fenders can be pretty tired too from being exposed to road chemicals and debris. Also, if a circuit has been overfused then it's wires and insulation will have suffered heat damage along with adjacent wires in the harness. Jim
