ISO: San Diego Body Shop recommendations for 911 panel painting?

Greetings all,

I am preparing to re-delete a rear spoiler from my '87 911 coupe that originally came as a spoiler delete wide body, but... ended up sprouting a rear spoiler at some point in the ensuing thirty years (prior to my ownership)...
https://amoroso.smugmug.com/1987-Porsch ... 70-Gemini/

As such, I've acquired a pre-owned, smooth / no holes, decklid that will need to be stripped, have a few dents tended to and painted Gemini Metallic. Additionally, I would like to have a front bumper, front valence, rear valence and headlight trim rings all painted at the same time. The car itself is a repaint, so while it isn't a #1 concours example, the current paint does present rather nicely. I would like to have a high quality job done, but I don't need concours. CPR painted a decklid + spoiler base for my other M491 and while the work was excellent, it was costly and I'd like to find a shop closer to me / i.e. the greater San Diego or North County area (I live in Carlsbad / Encinitas and work in UTC / La Jolla). I know that color matching metallic colors is tricky and I would like to avoid blending the paint into adjacent panels if possible, so a shop that's well versed in color matching would be a bonus.

So, with apologies to everyone outside of the San Diego area, any recommendations for shops that you trust to panel paint a few pieces of a beloved 911?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Frank nice TL.
Last place I saw you was at the corkscrew during Rennsport.

I'd trust this place to match and blend faded old colors.
Euro Sport Collision Repair
3455 Hancock St, San Diego, CA 92110
(619) 696-9923

Paint places are tough to recommend.

Greetings and thanks for the recommendation! I hear you about difficulties with recommendations, but I'm looking for a handful to interview and then make a decision.

Depending on how picky you are there aren’t very many people that are capable of doing a match like that. Someone like cpr would have the least experience. Try finding a high quality combo collision/classic shop. Avoid the large mso’s like the plague

Amato's in Sorrento Valley. Usually a long wait to get your job scheduled, but worth the wait.

I recommend Qualtech Collision Center on Market St in San Diego. Call ahead and make an appointment with Mark the owner. He is a Porsche owner and will understand your concerns.

I lived there for more than decade and had several things done. With a decklid, I would trust Ocean Beach Autobody on Voltaire in Ocean Beach. I believe its Randy. He did a lot of work on old English motorcycles for me and my buddy - even a Vespa - and he color matching was right on and he got it done pretty quickly. Check it out.

I would recommend SV autobody in ElCajon, Sigi Jimenez
1439 Magnolia Ave
El Cajon
619-292-5297, He just finished my 89, I also removed the tail, had him weld up holes and paint to match the car......he is currently repairing my Panamera, doing complete rebuild on my RSR 71, and my 73 RS....
Also great at metal work, great work and reasonable prices

I had some partial paint and body work on my 82 911 done by:

Philip Thearle’s AUTOWERKS
8809 Mission Gorge Rd
Santee CA 92071
619-449-0111 – Main

They did an excellent job and it was very expensive.

I gave sigi a call. I have a small but very technical paint issue. the owner is quite possibly impossible to satisfy but I hope sigi can meet my expectations...or maybe I need to lower mine? at any rate, he seems like a good fellow over the phone and is bending over backward for me. thank you ed for the name.

Amato’s is great but they won’t do the work. They only work on late model, high end cars. At least that’s what Paul Amato told me last time I asked.

GA Coachwork (George) does paint on high end restorations for Wayne Baker’s shop and they do nice work. Also, Best of Show in Escondido is a fine paint shop with Porsche experience.

Careful with the “restoration only” guys on needing a really good butt match. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve matched colors that were “impossible” to match and resulted in a poor match or an unnecessary blend by “specialist”. You have to be prepared to pay for it though. I’ve spent well into 20+ hours and $500+ on materials getting a proper match more than once.
