Replacing OUTER CV Boot

On my ‘87 the outer CV boot is torn and I want to replace it. However, on this end the stub shaft is attached somehow to the axle so I’m not entirely sure how to get it off.

Thought I read that the outer CV joint is not replaceable and that you have to purchase a whole new axle. That makes me think the outer side is not meant to come off period.

Do you have to remove the inner CV joint and boot and then slide the boot down to the outer side in order to replace it?

I can't link to it from my work... but i watched a video on youtube on the weekend showing a 911 CV rebuild. It shows exactly this.... give it a search. :)

Yes, that's how I had to replace the outer boot on my '88.

Thanks, jlex. I had a hunch. My buddies have non G50 cars and the cv’s are removable/the same on both ends of the axle. Ours, no such luck. Oh well, gives me a reason to clean and repack the inner one, too.

I have a 86 Carrera it has stub axles on the ends of the shafts even with a 915 trans.

It is a good excuse to clean and regrease the inner one. When one goes, the other tends to be not very far behind. In fact, I would replace that inner CV boot too.

Yup, that's my plan! The date sticker on the axle is from 2006. In 13 years time the boots have seen 30,000 miles (15,000 during my 5 year ownership :D ). Not too bad a duration I guess.

exactly.
at some Point the style of attachment was changed (dunno exactly... in 82?).

In your case you Need to unwind the Major crown-bolt from outside (behind the wheel/centercap.
It is heavily torqued (402Nm?) so you Need either a tough air-wrench or a loooong Lever to break it loose (retorquing to spec is a must!).

Then you loosen the trans CV side and then you can pullit out from the wheel bearing towards you.

Thanks for the info, Flo. I've already got the axle out and sitting on my bench but this is good review for how to remove it.
