Here's the retest with the brown wire connected. Another fail but improved numbers. The O2 sensor looks like it's been replaced as not the original. I'm guessing it's CAT time :mad:

I recently sold an old Jeep wrangler (to buy a Porsche ;) ) and had a similar high NO smog failure with the Jeep. New cat and it passed with no issues.

Yes that cap/rotor needs replacing, get the OEM Bosch parts. The wires also look rough.

Other thing I suggest is take the car for a good drive then park it and remove the spark plugs. Check to see how all six compare with each other, post some pics here.

Because you are almost passing my bet is a new cat will get you to passing state.

i do not think the cap and rotor is your problem,neither are the spark plug wires.The cracks you see is the outside rubber cover not a cable itself...I would also make it a little richer before another test;..

btw when they test it do they put the probe before cat or after the cat??It should before the cat for adjusting and testing after the cat...

They put the probe into the tailpipe for testing. I'm planning on replacing the cap, rotor and wires just because they are original.

I did some research on a CAT today and called a shop that said he could cut out the old cat and install a universal in it's place. He said they sell ones with flanges already attached too.

When I was a Porsche tech. We would set the idle and fuel mixture with a emissions tester. They normally are within spec from just this unless something mechanical failed.

well? the best and cheaper solution would be if some of your CA neighbors pelicans can lend the cat for smog test..then put in straight pipe till next time ...

I used the CA legal cat from DEC... it works fine.

Here were the results with about 7 miles on the cat, stock '89 chip, no vacuum leaks, rebuilt injectors, new cap / rotor / plugs, new O2 sensor and perfectly dialed in idle and CO adjustment using a wideband O2 sensor. Literally rolled right off the highway and pulled in for testing.

Ordered the DEC cat and gasket/bolt kit and should be here on Thursday ready for install. Thanks for sharing the same and those are good numbers I'm looking forward to sharing soon.

Go in with temp SUPER hot and the numbers should improve...

I'm sure a new CAT will help pass emissions.
But what has my eye is the high NOx number, this is usually the result of a lean running condition.

I suggest the base mixture be checked and reset if need be. It can easily be done with a CO meter or better yet a Wide Band O2 gauge. If you use the WBO2 you should target a base mixture at idle of about 14.0AFR with the O2 sensor disconnected. Just follow the Bently manual for this procedure.

You really should double check the base mixture after you replace the cat.

Had some sweet victory today with the help of WTD mufflers and Poway Smog as the car is officially passing and registered in California now. The passing numbers are almost unbelievable and the old cat had a massive blowout inside of it.

calidude..do not throw away the cat make it a strait pipe for you....just remove the inside filter...now you do not need a smog check for 2 year so put your strait pipe back in and you will like the sounds even better;-)

The car got a lot of attention at the DMV, a guy from Indonesia and I were talking about his trip to Germany and how he almost bought a 70's Mercedes SL convertible to ship back. Also another guy who was a veteran from the Navy was telling me about his being stationed in Germany and he used to see these on the Autobahn near his base.

I really like that about the car being a new owner now and how it's an opportunity to be humble to listen to people's history and why the car is important to them. That's pretty cool in my book...

calidude...well after spending most of my young live in California with those speed limits i did got caught up once coming from Ventura for 125/h at 4 in the morning;-)..now i have the autobahn 25 minutes from my house in Europe...
In Ca we also used to drive to Montana where there were no speed limits ,at least those days now i don`t know?
