IROC bumper fitment on narrow body car
My IROC bumper showed up today, picked it up used. It seems to fit really wide though. Is this normal?
Looks like I might have to section it and stitch it back together. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

Not normal. That appears to be a bumper for a flared car. "Narrow body" IROC bumpers fit pretty well without any modifications.

Some are better than others. I did what you mention to mine - sectioned and stuck back together. Adding in the "normal" fiberglass bubbles in gelcoat, waviness, etc and it was a lot of work!
Also something to consider - If you're going to run a front cooler, mock it up with lines and mounts in place before modifying the bumper. I'm now fine-tuning my cooler mounting and lines to fit behind my perfect bumper. If the opening still had even a little of the 3/4 of an inch I sectioned out of it, I wouldn't have to do so much tweaking on everything now behind it.. |

LOL, yeah, you can say I’m running an up-front cooler ![]() I was thinking about making the opening a bit more rounded, to give it a less pronounced look. I’ve already made a wood mock-up of the radiator and working on designing the duct, and making a cro-moly protective cage for it. I’m also going to use a Honda Civic aluminum bumper bar behind the IROC bumper as impact protection, it’s the same curve and everything. ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

I was thinking about building a bumper inside the fiberglass of a narrow body IROC bumper, when I saw a Civic that had the bumper cover removed and wondered if I could make that work. Have you identified a specific year or model that has close to the right curve? Any other information that you'd care to share? Michael S. Jackson '78 SC |

My idea is to use the IROC cover just like modern cars use a plastic cover : just for show, with a solid bumper bar behind it for impact protection. The late 90’s civics had almost the exact same curve, I tested a bumper bar and it fit. These are made out of steel though. That’s what I was originally going to go with. I’m doing some research on which one fits the best, but most new 200? cars had aluminum bumper bars. The rear Chevy Cruze bumper *rear* bar looks like almost an exact fit. You can pick the up used for like $60, which is less than the cost of the aluminum to make one. I’m going to go by my local scrap yard next week or so and see if I pick one up. Basically, to fit a bumper bar, it’s a matter of finding one that fits, and machining / welding up some mounts. I can handle all the machining / fabrication. And possibly trimming the bumper bar. When I find a combo that works, I’ll be glad to make bumper brackets for other people. The nice thing with this approach is it’s easy to glass some tabs to the bumper and bolt it solidly to the bumper bar. I’ll definitely let you know what I come up with.
