915 vs G50 for an '88 Carrera Targa 3.2

Need some sound advice.

Had a deal on a G50 which may have gone south for a long-term '88 Carrera Targa build (had served its previous owner as a parts car for some years).

Beyond "purists" considerations, can I mate a 915 to a 3.2? Assuming I can, what type of modifications will be required.

Recently picked up a solid 3.2 core for the build.

Welcome your words... .

Graci,
Frank

The engine doesn't care. There were 915 3.2s from 84-86. If it's an originally G50 chassis, you need to replace the G50 shifting stuff and pedals with the 915 stuff. Otherwise it's basically bolt in.

Oh, and notch the 915 for the dme pickup on the flywheel if it's not originally from a 3.2 car.

The front end nose of the G50 is a little bigger than the 915, so there is also a difference in the way the torsion tubes are situated in G50 cars (915 cars have, essentially one long tube in the chassis, but G50 cars have two, one on either side of the trans nose). Since you have an '88 chassis, you are already set up for it. The G50 is a bit more robust, and a bit less temperamental. My $.02 is to save the hassle of new shifting hardware and go with the G50.

Go with the G50 if you can find one and don't look back. The 915 I ran for 15 years was darn fussy no matter how much I catered to it. The G50 I now own is really nice to drive. They both feel the same to me except for the balkiness. Why struggle?
Don't forget that the g50 requires the hydraulic clutch vs cable controlled 915.

G50 !

Why would you even think about going back to the less robust 915 ?

I say the odds favor the G50 even if it's about the $$$ when the car is already built for it.
