I've done a quick thread search and haven't found my answer yet. My oil pressure gauge alternately pegs out high, bounces to nothing and then kind of back an forth...just started this yesterday. I'm guessing I probably need a new sender. Anyone have any other suggestions I can check out when I get time this weekend for me and the p-car??
Thanks, fellas Ryan

Try cleaning and tightening the spade terminal at the sending unit first.

Robert,
That's what I'm talking about! Thanks for the tip...I was thinking there would be an electrical issue to checkout first. I don't have my manuals with pics handy this second and it's dark outside now. I'd like to take a quick look before I drive home...is the sender on top of the engine near the rear? Ryan

On my 83 it is on pass side just below the a/c compressor.

check the sender and gauge with a 20 dollar mechanical gage. i would park it until i knew for sure. on the 72 the sender is above the flywheel at the parting line for the case.

Robert your pic must be of a later model. To find the sender on a '72, you need to remove the air cleaner housing, look dead center of the engine top, towards the front of the car. How do I know? Yeah, I had to change a sender last year...can you imagine one giving out after 30 years? Horrible quality these days!

Hi Robert,
Checked outside with a flashlight. Mine's right where yours is located. Connections look ok, but could use a good going over with the wire brush this weekend. Tim, I was thinking of looking behind the cluster as well... Ryan

Anybody else ever experience this symptom and resolved it by cleaning up the various associated electrical contacts, avoiding a sender replacement?
Ryan

update:
I checked my wires behind the gauge itself in the cluster...everything looks beautiful. I've cleaned all contacts in the rear on the sender with a wire brush. They're beautiful now too, both power and ground. The gauge seems smooth and maybe working until pressure reaches around 40-50 psi (2500-3000 rpms when cold, ballpark) and then it just jumps up and pegs 140. When I get back down to idle it seems to settle around 20-30 psi like I'd expect. Any ideas? Should I just bite the bullet and get the new sender? Anything else I should try? Ryan
