Welding in new weld stud for ground
Good afternoon everyone,
I'm relocating my battery to the smugglers box. I want to install a new M10 ground stud in the box. Although there were a few M6 I didn't want to use those Before welding on my car what do I need to disconnect/isolate before welding so I don't damage any of the electronics? Thanks David |

Why not just run a bolt through and not worry about welding?

I had considered that but I was concerned about loosing my ground due to corrosion. I also considered a nut , bolt and soldering them together to ensure a good ground

I ran a bolt through the sheet metal AND soldered the bolt head to the body. BTW, I used a large soldering iron.
On your '74, with the battery out of the car, I can't imagine you could cause any problems with the electrics on the car. Just make sure you have a very good ground from your welder as close to the weld as possible.

If there's a computer in the system, best to unplug it. A good way to attach a stud to sheet metal is to grind the head of a bolt flat and thin, pop it through a drilled hole and weld the backside.

You could also gas weld or braze. I like brazing since it is less prone to rust at the joint. Many factory ground posts are brazed.
