Can't find the FE mark
Traced the annoying squeak/chirp in my engine bay to the MFI pump. I'm assuming it was mis-timed and somehow the injectors going off at the wrong time made the noise. I'm following Wayne's directions in setting the pump timing, but my pulley has no FE indication for the timing mark. Per the procedure, I can get as far as TDC for cylinder number four, but I can't determine which other mark is the FE. Can someone give me a hint degree-wise how far I go past TDC to reach the FE mark?
This board is great, the wealth of knowledge here is unbelievable. Thanks in advance for your assistance. |
FE should be 40 degrees after TDC #4. As far as the sound goes, i would get a mirror (you're gonna need it anyway) and see if the belt is rubbing on anything. Like a fuel line.

P-Thomas is correct, 40 degrees past tdc for #4 cylinder same as 400 degrees past tdc for #1 cylinder. I just wanted to add that there are 3 hex head screws holding the toothed gear on the back of the injection pump. I could never seem to get the timing exact without loosening those screws and then lining up the timing marks exactly, then retightening the screws. The screws loosen the gear enough to get about 15 degrees of adjusment, just enough to be a couple of teeth off in rough adjust, then loosen screws, line up the timing marks, then tighten screws and check timing again to make sure nothing moved.

Thanks for the info. Hadn't considered aligining the gear on the pump. The sound was internal to the fuel system definitely not rubbing anything.

Before making any other adjusments or repairs to your MFI system make sure you read/download all the great MFI info on this site. Here's the link to tech articles on MFI. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_MFI/TipMFI.htm
