Valve Adjustment & 930

Well, getting ready for my 1st valve adjustment job

Looks to me that the "entire" intake plumbing on the left side (cylinder 1-3) needs to come off before I can even get to the valve cover? Is there any easier way to do that?

And any other pointers from the experts?

thanks...

remove the gulp valve and it's hoses, the curved rubber intake boot, the air filter housing for the smog pump, the small hose to the wastegate, and use zip ties to hold back the hose to the brake booster and whatever else is in the way. now the valve cover can be removed. some folks take off the bypass housing, but i don't feel it's worth the extra effort. then get used to a one handed valve adjust on the left uppers. some folks also lower the engine and do it from underneath. again, not worth the effort, and you can break things like fuel lines and wiring if you're not real careful. there's only those three that are hard to get to, so take your time.

I am no where near as talented as JW. I just take the whole frkn engine out and give everything a complete "going over". This is also a great time for "while you're there" upgrades. 1 weekend out. 1weekend in. unless you sucumb to the upgrade bug

Just did this for the first time on my 89 930. I decided that I would not even attempt with the engine in the car, at least until I've done it a few more times with the engine out. There's just so much crap in the way that you can't even see to get off if you don't know where it is...

Either way for what it's worth having done it once with the engine out of the car, I won't do it with the engine in until I'm a LOT more familiar with all the little connections over there.

A real pain to lower the whole mess just to do valves but 'it is what it is'...

Good luck!

I *used* to lust for a 930.
That is, until I read JW's post.

JW - thanks for the comments. So my real nightmare fear is really true Guess we all have to start somewhere but as you & others said - I really don't think its worth it to drop the engine just for a valve job.
At least what's helping in my case is that all the smog pump, cat, ... are gone so as few less items to remove.
Now, one question - how do I have to remove the hose to the wastegate (I assume you're talking about from intercooler to wastegate?)?
thanks again...

You need to remove curved rubber hose from air-metering device to BOV valve. Wastegate is something that sits on exhaust.

Check out curved rubber-hose just under the lamp on this picture:

It all sounds much more complicated than it is, just dig the stuff out...intecooler is also in the way...

Hi beepbeep... I'm going exactly the way that you are showing but just want to make sure that I'm going the right way. Those rubber hose aren't the easiest to remove

Well, rubber hose from CIS is pretty easy to remove but hard to install back (you might need second pair of hands to do it)

Does anyone have a full set of instructions or know of a place to get instructions?? I plan on doing my valve adjustment this fall, so I would love to get my hands on the proper method.

Thanks,

Dave

just to clarify, the curved rubber hose is the big fat 3.5" diameter piece at the top left corner. the wastegate hose is just a 1/2" rubber hose that's in the way, between the intercooler and side tin. without the smog pump, etc, you're half way there.

i think my wastegate hose should be ok (at least won't interfere with removing the valve cover). And I suspect I'll end up removing the entire 3.5" hose sections from the air meter down to the turbo - from the looks of it, the section going to the turbo (lower left corner of beepbeep's photo) will be in the way but that seems to be the hardest to remove though
