Approaching 900 miles on 911SC rebuild
In February, I bought an '81 911SC (my first Porsche) that had a rebuilt motor (engine was taken apart down to the crank ), CIS and trans were also refurbished/rebuilt. The car had been driven approximately 250 miles after the rebuild when I got it. I've driven it 650 miles, warming it up gently around town, and then driving it on back roads. I go up and down through the revs , pulling from 2500 rpms to 5000 rpms, letting it coast back down to 2000. Then i will drive it for short periods up to 5500 when it's fully warmed up. The temps have been in the 50s here in Nashville, and it takes some time for the temp to cross the bottom white line (for a while I wasn't sure the temp gauge worked!).

My question is, when do I consider the motor (the rings specifically) broken in? I've avoided driving at a constant rpm for hundreds of miles, and the motor feels like it's loosening up a bit. The mechanic told me to warm it up and rev it, and make the motor work hard. I'm aware these motors don't want to be babied at 3000 rpms.
