Smog pump bracket engine install advice or tips sought for neophyte
I remember how the ear on my smog pump caught, under the shelf which holds the motor mount, during engine lift after a partial engine drop. I shuddered as it lifted the whole car. I solved it with a Big Screwdriver prying on the ear pushing the engine back Towards the front while pumping on my Jack. Is there a more elegant way to install the engine transmission pair?

There is no other way. Your SC enging-gearbox combo needs to tilt up, go forward, and then the rear raised to complete the install. Somewhere during the process, you need to make sure it clears the rear side of the body.

Possibly the smarter way would be to install the smog pump after the motor is in position. Goes on and off relatively easy.

Mike ,why do you have a smog pump??it is only good if you are going for test...no other reason,really.

If you are pulling the smog pump, why not the air injector lines and valves. Then install plugs in the heads to fully remove the system.

in that case do as Harold said.Remove the christmas tree(that how we called in in the 1980) and plug the cyl heads with special copper bolts made for it..i see no more copper but here.

Seems removing the Christmas tree might make sale of car to a CA buyer difficult. So I’m not likely to do it. I’ve removed my pump and I plugged the big hose with a cork and that’s all for now.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1552049174.jpg
Wonder if the yoke can be removed after an engine pull? |
Hi Mike..you can remove the yoke even with the engine in.
The mounts are gone as you can see the rubber is collapsed...mainly the left one...keep the right as an emergency spare.... Ivan |

there are 3 nuts.But first remove the EGR valve with the hose and store it.It holds on bottom with hose clamp and lift it up from the shroud.it is part of the metal bracket.Once you remove it you will see the 3rd nut.Then slide the bracket out and replace the 2 upper nuts back so they hold the chain housing cover.Of course if you are planing to sell the 911 you keep the xmass tree pipes but you can remove it and store it.If you sell to CA the new owner can put it on himself;-)
Also the bottom stud you can remove it has no effect on the cover.... Ivan |

it's been years, but I used to swap SSI's out for the stock exhaust every two years and recall remove/replace the pump mount w/o any real difficulty with the motor in the car. regarding removing the spider manifold that supplies the forced air to the exhaust side of the heads there is a 914 brake caliper part that works well. I agree copper is nice, but with some antiseize the steel 914 parts came out every two years w/o issue.
have you run the car with the lines simply plugged? seems like the pressure generated from the exhaust side through the spider manifold could be high?? ive heard of times where the plug came out of the heads and it got very loud in a hurry |
