Locking lug nut
 

Hey Guys,

So I have a new set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+. Attempted to take the wheels off only to discover this fun little locking lug.

It has 5 holes, I attempted to nudge it loose with a punch that fit but no luck.

Wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction for a key of some sort.

I'd really hate to have to use a hole saw and start cutting.

Do you have a Dremel? If so, you can cut a radial notch in the side, and then use a hammer and either a chisel or big flat blade screwdriver set at the proper angle to loosen it. A moderate tap or two should be enough, unless it's on there gorilla tight.

I would use as i did plenty times before , pipe drill one size over then the stud..it works well
like this,once you get deep enough the ring will fell off...do not go to deep...

Before you do anything drastic, go to a major tire outfit (plenty of STS in NJ).
They are supposed to have keys for everything.

I very much doubt that a tire shop will have this key for the lug nut.
It was in 1980`s Porsche original safety lug nut and it came with a special socket..save yourself a time and drill it out..I have probably 3-4 of these old sockets but i`m in Europe and that does not help you...drill it out and be gentle about it......it is really easy...

I like Bill’s idea but hear what Proporsche is saying. Why not just call the tire shop and ask if they have key? If they do you win (but bring a spare lug but if you have- although you could make it home with 4). If they don’t, take a deep breath and drill.

Yea, I called 2 tire shops and a really great foreign repair shop near me. No luck yet, but I think its worth calling a couple more before I go down the route of drilling.

@porschenut- I do own a Dremel, are you suggesting create notch so I can chisel the nut away or create a notch that I can use as an anchor point to spin the nut off?

you will be much more safer with the pipe drill then with a hammer and chisel or puncher.You will absolutely miss once and here goes your fuchs....
I have done this plenty of times.And again nobody in any tire shop will even know how this key will look a like .It was back in the 1980 did i mentioned that?;-)oh yah not even Google know;-))))

Your best bet is who could have this socket ,is John Walker Shop...or Peter Zimmerman--from here

I would do as you did and use a punch to walk it off. use a bigger punch and a bigger hammer if you have to . I would suggest an air chizel as that would work the best but super risky with the wheel right there. Drilling it out is even worse though. Spiral sockets would be my next choice

They make ones specificly for lug nuts aswell. Honestly Im surprised the shops you already called couldnt help. They have these tools and deal with these all the time

he does not need to remove the lug nut but what is on bottom every lug nut on 911 and it is flat with the rim.....these tool are for nothing for Alex...really....

As Proporsche has mentioned, those lug removal tools are great for normal lugs, but this one is flat and flush.

I think the best route is to call shops and look for a key.

Backup plan is to go with the pipe/hole saw route and lots of care.

Use the notch as an anchor point for the screwdriver blade or chisel, and hold the screwdriver at an angle while you tap the end with a hammer to spin the nut off. I've used this technique several times on various stubborn nuts and stripped bolt heads. It is very easy and quick.

Nonsense. Many of us on here have used this technique without ever missing. You do not have to hit it hard and the entire procedure including making the notch takes about 60 seconds. Way easier and faster than what you are proposing.

My key broke once and I just created a new one from a old socket and cut new grasps into it...got all 4 off and replaced without locks..if they want the wheels that bad, they will take the car too

A pin spanner might work on this lock nut.

Lost the key on one of my McGard wheel locks. Americas Tire used a hex socket that barely fit over the lock lug nut, hammered it on to lock it in place, and took it off that way. Took them 2 minutes.
