What is this for???

Hey Guys,
Need some help. Almost ready to install the engine back into my '76 930. Engine was out and apart when I got the car. After looking and looking, I haven't been able to determine what this fitting is coming off of the back of the intake. If you look close at the photo, you can see it is threaded.

Thanks in advance!
Bob

To me that looks like maybe the oil like that should go into the breather on the top of your engine, which has no hose on it? That would be the big silver mart to the right of the hose you circled. I think that is your engine breather from eh crankcase.

Backdating '76 930 to original non-intercooled setup, what should I change?

Hmm. If either of those are true, then something else is wrong.
I thought the crankcase breather went to the oil tank.
My Aux Air Valve is plumbed over to the Cold Start Valve area.
If any one else could chime in, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

That crankcase nipple sticking out off the top of the engine should, it’s does on my 3.2 and my 3.6. Where does the hose you circles go to? Is that a plug in the end of it?

Chris,
The hose that is circled comes out of the intake (from nipple cast into the intake). Yes, there is a plug on the end that has female threads. Don't know if it's factory or not. I didn't get to take the engine apart and have limited experience with these.
I assumed it is some large vacuum port. I wouldn't expect it to be some sort of air or gas recirculation as I would expect those to go upstream of the mass air flow meter. Was originally thinking it was for a brake booster, until I found I didn't have one of those.

Your case breather is a partial hard line that bolts to the #6 intake on its way to the oil tank
There is also a fixture in the area for the air cleaner support

manifold

What you have is a '77 Turbo intake manifold. In '77 the factory used an "additional AAV" for cold start assist. What you have circled is the opening in the lower manifold that is used in conjunction with the AAV and is tied into the upper manifold.

In your picture, the opening is plugged, which is fine.

Here is what it looks like as originally used.

Thanks Stevie.
So your picture shows it going to that dashpot?

Okay, I just gotta ask. Does the plug have female threads because it's a lugnut?

Why yes, 69 Targa, LOL, it is a lugnut! I've never used, and probably would have never thought about the multiple uses of a lugnut for this application!

Ivan, yes went through the thread, but Stevie's photos didn't help me much on this issue (although thread did help me with something else). Both of my dashpot connections are on the other side of the intake and there's nothing else for my large line to connect to in the rear.

OK. I'll just keep it plugged.

Thanks!

You should cap the manifold with something like this. Be sure to use the appropriate clamp.
