911 engine VIN - how to find original car ?

I bought out the parts inventory of a local small independent Porsche shop whose owner has recently passed away. In the parts hoard is a rebuilt 1974 911 engine on a rolling stand.

Can anyone suggest a way to find the VIN of the car this originally came in ?

The only way of which I am aware is to contact Porsche directly and ask them to locate the Kardex. You may or may not have success as not all records are available, but I believe a 74 could still be found. That being said, I'm not aware of identifications being made with the engine number, only the VIN. I get the impression that records are classified by the VIN and it would take a lot of "human effort" to sort through the VINs of 74 to locate the engine number. I could be mistaken about this, so someone with direct knowledge will confirm or correct.

You could post the engine number here and hope someone one day does a google search for it.

You’d have to assume that most car-less engines are from wrecked cars, though. But there was a lot of swapping 2.7s for 3.0s back in the day, so maybe there’s a 75 with a later engine in it waiting to be reunited.

The big attraction of 74s is that you can put a different motor in them and not worry about smog laws. So maybe nobody will ever look for it.
