paint....bad?

When looking for a late '70s early 80's 911, should I avoid one that's been repainted and really try to find original paint?
Thanks.

with paint jobs costing well over 5K these days...it makes sense to find one that doesnt need any paint work at all. As far as original paint, some of the re-paint jobs on this board are amazing.

You will be hard pressed to find a 20-30 year old car with original paint.
Good luck.

Man, it was outstanding. Spent all weekend with the windows open jack hammering up floor tile in the kitchen with Stones, Derailers and Bad Livers playing in the background. Great weekend!!!

Not bad here in Mid Missouri either. The pics were taken at a BBQ at my house on Saturday. A few of the British Car Club members were prepping their cars for the Missouri Endurance Rally scheduled for next weekend. Not for light weights or those with uncomfortable car seats. It is a race through Missouri where you have to take a picture of your car at different state parks. It is approximately 700 miles of driving through mostly 2 lane winding roads and you have 20 hours to complete it. Winner is shortest time and lowest number of miles.

Not necessarily, but if it's been re-painted you will want to be certain it hasn't also been hit and poorly repaired. Look under the car, up inside the wheel-wells, inside all 4 corners, the fit of all body panels, doors, lids, etc. Look for any signs of residual wrinkling, welding, etc. from previous body/chassis repair. Look at the quality of the paint job, is it the original color?, did they do the door jambs, inside the trunk and engine bay? is it smooth? no blemishes? When I was looking at my '78, one of my first comments to the seller was on the quality of the paint on a 22 year old car, he told me it had been re-painted sometime in the past, before he bought it (he'd owned it 5-6 years), he didn't know why it had been re-painted. Obviously, I then spent more time looking for evidence of previous body/chassis damage than anything else - I didn't find any. Whoever did the re-paint on mine did a very nice job - I bought the car.

When I bought my car in 1991 the paint had been repainted in several areas and was poorly done. I checked for body damage at the time and could not find any real damage that I should have been concerned about. Well, today the car is completely being stripped. The repainted areas were due to minor paint damage and not due to any real body damage. Original paint on the car was getting pretty tired and needed to be resprayed. As long as your are satisfied that the car is clean from any major body damage then a repaint should not be something to shy away from.
