Fuel lines
1974 911 targa 83,000 miles.
Tried firing it up and discovered fuel leak in fuel lines toward back of engine bay ( nearest front of car). Lines were brittle through age I assume. Can anyone help with sizes outside diameter and inside diameter. Also what type of fuel line should I use |

This is a good place to start.. ^^^^ assuming your fuel lines are all original, you should seriously consider replacing ALL of them, from the fuel tank to the engine compartment then all those in the engine compartment. The plastic fuel lines which run through the tunnel from the fuel tank to the engine compartment are particularly problematic as they are probably also brittle and if they start leaking ?? bad news.

i would take some calipers to the various fittings and draw up a sketch.
Eric at BAT/Mocal is also very helpful with fittings and fuel/oil lines. he made the lines i needed the same day and i received them in the mail about 2 days later. |

Although my targa is originally from California, I am in the Uk and shipping is very expensive from USA, so looking to source nearer home. |

Reality check. Shipping is peanuts compared to the hassle of sourcing everything yourself, or your car catching fire. Len (BoxsterGT) is your guy, you'll get bespoke lines of highest quality. the lines themselves aren't cheap but the shipping is just a fraction. I just replaced mine with new lines from Len, highly recommended.

Go here for a parts list - you will have to download the PET catalog as a PDF.
https://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesandservices/porscheservice/serviceandorgininalparts/originalparts/ Go to the fuel section 2 and browse - you should be able to buy decent fuel lines in bulk and cut to length yourself. Search here in pelican for the nice recommended clamp, I don't know the brand. Don't get Oeticker clamps unless you want to buy the tool. in many cases, the line diameter is described in the parts list - or you can measure yours.

![]() Don't know if we have spoken littleeagle28, but here are a pair of original 74 tunnel lines vs my Polyamide replacements...... ![]() ![]() The original White Nylon Tunnel tubes turn Brown (Inner in photos) and brittle, and will crack at the slightest disturbance. The Black Polyamide tube (Outer in photos) has been used since 1976 by Porsche and so far seems to be bulletproof. This same type of tube is now used worldwide by most auto manufacturers. Can't say enough about Len, he is your go-to guy for proper fuel line replacements. Been a while but I believe I replaced all the engine compartment lines on my 3.2 race car with his SS line set, excellent quality and value..

Len's product is the best. Just got around to installing the set I bought off him and they are top shelf. He also send you a part to connect the old line to the new ones so that you can pull out the old line with the new one following it. Without this the replacement is very very painful.

Update:
Replaced a lot of fuel lines in the engine bay, as most crumbled to dust when I manhandled them. Will get the ones running under the car from len later, as I am currently using an IV straight into the fuel pump at the moment. So tried starting again, no leaks, but no joy with starting either. Tried playing with the flap in the air box/ fuel distributer, I suspect the 'plunger' in the fuel mixer is stuck in the up position. Does anyone know how to remove the mixer top from the engine, so as to try and loosen the plunger. Thanks all. |
