Shipping Cylinder Heads?

Any creative ideas to ship heads ?

I and others have made an “H” of plywood and bolted the heads together with long bolts through the plywood.

I must be missing something - the H lets you bolt the top and bottom with a middle divider?

roll them in cardboard with enough of it hanging over the edges to fold them over and tape the heck out of them encapsulating them completely. kinda like wrapping a present. then pack in a big box with standard cushioning for heavy parts.

How my heads came back from cgarr:
1 piece of plywood, three heads on each side with combustion chambers facing the wood, each pair of heads bolted together through the plywood with some long bolts.
Then place in well padded box as a unit.

Here’s an “artist” rendering of how it’s done- sides protect and hold upright in box and heads get bolted to the middle face to face. Make the wood tall enough to protect intake and exhaust studs.

When cgarr returned mine, he just individually wrapped and boxed each one in perfectly sized boxes then placed in another cardboard box to ship.

I have mine bolted to a piece of plywood that will go into a double sided cardboard box. another peice of plywood on top to protect them.

will be shipping my heads and case to Steve Weiner at Rennsport systems soon.

The most important thing is to protect the machined surfaces from the studs on the other heads.

When i shipped my 993 heads to Steve that was exactly how he told me to ship them.

I have been waiting for a few months to send my stuff to Steve. they were just overwhelmed with work in prep for rennsport. I also need to finish boxing/protecting the case to ship too.

I have just about finished the H pattern for shipping the heads. Do I have to use shouldered bolts? Or can I use a bolt that is threaded through the head? I am concerned of the possibility for damage due to the threaded portion being in contact with the head?

I just used regular bolts with washers at the head and nut ends. Tighten them enough that they won’t bounce around in transit and that will prevent the inside of the holes for the head bolts from getting marred. No need to torque them to extremes.

The critical place to avoid marring is on the bottom where the heads marry with the cylinders, if you’re mounting on a wood panel it should be soft enough but if you’re an overachiever you could put some foam wrap or scraps of cloth between the heads and panel before you bolt down.

i am more worried about bending my loooong intake studs on my 930.

When Ollies sent mine back they were each in their own individual box inside a bigger box.

It takes more (much more) time than you would think to make the box. Get plywood, find bolts that are the correct length, and build it to fit a box.

Makes me think that rolling them in cardboard may have been easier.
