Re-center steering Wheel?
I am working on a home alignment after having my complete suspension apart, including the steering rack.
To reassemble/reattach the steering rack, you have the line up the groove in the splines of the steering rack rod with the U-joint bolt hole in the smugglers box, so I don't think I made any mistakes there as it seems there is only one way for it to go on. The steering rack itself was taken apart and regreased/rebuilt. I also added spacers to the bottom of the rack to get rid of bump steer when lowered. With that said, prior to taking off the rack I noted that the right (passenger side) tie rod end was showing 3 threads and the driver's side, left side, was showing 5 threads and the wheel was centered, car tracked straight. I installed my A-arms and struts onto the car and left the tie rod ends uninstalled to try and line things up before I popped in the ball joints. For the reinstall procedure, I centered the steering wheel in the car at roughly the half way point in the available turns it had (Car has about 3 turns lock to lock, turning it 1.5 turns and then centering as best as possible). Then I tried to attach the tie rod ends with the wheels straight. Right now, my passenger side wheel is toe'd IN with no threads available to shorten the rod end to have it straight. And my driver's side wheel is still a bit toed OUT with quite a lot of threads showing. Question: To get everything back and centered with some room for adjustment in the tie rods, what should I do? - Inside the car: find exact center of steering rack (1.5 turns) and take the steering wheel off and center it there? - Perhaps I missed something on the install of all components? Green - Steering wheel centered in Car Blue Tie Rod End and Inner Tie Rod (showing lots of adjustment thread, can potentially push wheel out more to reduce toe OUT) Red Tie Rod End and Inner Tie Rod (cannot shorten any more to bring front of wheel out, Reduce Toe IN) ![]() |

It sounds like it may be easiest to correct by moving your steering wheel by a spline (or two). Just set your wheels straight (and maybe give yourself a few threads of toe adjustment on the tie rods). Then remove your steering wheel and set it where you want it.

Thanks, will probably take that approach.
I am a bit confused as to why it changed so much from taking it apart and putting it back in, in 'the same place" Perhaps, just the camber caster change, along with the rack spacers. |
