Installing 139 fog lights and switch
I purchased a pair of 139 model fog lights for my 911T. I have a few questions.
Do I need to remove bumper to install lights? Are brackets needed to mount them? Also the car did not have a switch but it has a blank on the dash. How do I access this? I looked inside the the trunk but cannot see access there looking behind and around the air ducting. I was thinking if I removed the radio I might be able to get to it. Also there is no existing wiring. So I believe I would have to run wires to that point on the dash. The fuse box calls for a 25 fuse but I have no idea as tho the gauge of wire needed. Is this all a DIY'er or better handled by a pro? I have this switch I recently purchased. I'm in hopes that it is correct.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1553715171.png |
So, I installed through the grill lights on my 71 T a couple weeks ago. You can try pulling a gauge/clock and see if you can get to it or from the back, radio won't do it, its above radio and sealed. Others may know better. I wired mine as they are driving lights to the high beams. They are awesome bright.
Some of the wiring is in the car already. There is a green/yellow wire wrapped up on top of the battery box in the bundle of wires that go to the signals and headlights. You can reach it from inner fender or maybe through horn grills. When you unbundle the loop, you'll see a couple FT of green/yellow (IIRC) + a brown (ground) wire. They are tinned and stripped already. These go through the firewall plug on either side of your frunk. They then go to the bottom fuse on the lower fuse block (very last fuse) When looking at the fuse, assuming you never had fogs or driving lights, there will be 2 wires on the left side (these go to the fender wires) and no wire on the right side. So what you could do: mount the fogs in the bumper extend the ground/hot wires from the bundles in the fenders to the fogs. I'd use 12 or 14ga. Crimp them with heat shrink over the wires to Seal them up and use connectors. Next, figure out your dash switch Run a fused hot from the battery to a relay. probably keep that in the fuse block area. I used a Bosch automotive relay, you could wire in the OEM type relay and mount it in the same area as the horn relay... Run the other side of the hot on the relay to the empty fuse side of that last fuse. This will run the lights from the battery through the relay to the lights. The wires from the block to the lights are fused. Ground one side of the trigger on the relay Then, you need a hot to trigger the relay. For this, just install your dash switch. Tap into a switched hot for the switch. If lit will need to be grounded too. Then, the switched side, run to the frunk and tap to the hot trigger side of the relay. With this setup, the dash switch is just a trigger and will only pull 1/2amp or so, very low power, so you can use 16ga for that from the switch to the relay. With my setup, I just tapped into the high beam trigger to trigger the driving lights relay, so barely had to add any wiring at all. NO dash switch on mine. Hope this helps. Done. |
Thanks for your input, it helps a great deal, much appreciated. It double posted because I tried to get a pic in the first post but did't show. So I thought the edit would work to show a pic of the switch but it double posted again without the pic.
