Unidentified debris in early 73 fuel tank

This is an early fuel tank, so no swirl pot or central drain. Here's what came out after an overnight with two gallons of concentrated vinegar in the tank, followed by a rinse with a garden hose. Should I suspect a failed inside coating in the tank? It's very difficult to see the inside of the tank.

It looks like plastic film, but nothing like any tank coatings I have seen. The coatings never last and rust usually comes back. If you are interested in replacing the gas tank with a new one, Dansk makes a very nice 73.5 tank with the internal baffles and swirl pot to improve fuel delivery, along with ability to hold full size spare. About $550.

Thank you for that reply, Ed. Before I put in a new tank, I would like to evaluate a commercial cleaning of the tank that I have. It seems to be in pretty good condition, except for the plastic film that continues to come out, even after multiple rinses.

Can anyone suggest a service near Long Beach?

For what it will cost to clean out the old tank, you will save money by just buying a new one. Review some of the threads here about cleaning old gas tanks, and how many people never really get them clean and still get crap clogging the fuel lines. This is one place where you can end up being penny wise and pound foolish.

I looked into this a few years ago .
I cannot remember exact details , but enough to give you clues to follow up on ..
The cleaning company was in Temecula , the coating company was in Nevada (Vegas I think) and specialized in vintage motorcross bikes .
I’ll check the cloud for emails , but cannot remember what car it was for so expecting zero results .

Does the Dansk 73.5 CIS tank work on an early 1973, which would be MFI?

It would require a few different fittings, but it will work better than the original. The 1973.5 baffles and swirl pot were designed to minimize fuel sloshing around, especially during cornering, to keep fuel supply to the fuel pump inlet. It also has a better fuel screen in the tank.
