Rear view mirror
 

Any thoughts on best product for attaching my rear view mirror to windshield? It’s for my 69 E.

You can get the special adhesive for it at Autozone just make sure to locate the correct position before attaching the mounting button centrally between the sun visors.

I've used generic super glue at the track once in a pinch from a friendly "parked next to" buddy and the stuff from my FLAPS since once, they both worked. If you wanted a suggestion from a pro I might stop by any decent auto glass shop and ask what they suggest.

I have had poor luck installing those myself. I have used the factory kits and kits from other sources. Finally I rolled into a glass shop and they installed it for like $20 and it remained until the day I sold the car. I definitely had the window marked on the exterior with tape for them to install it exactly where it belonged.

I've used the mirror pad adhesive on my '76 and an '84. Available at PP:Loctite Rearview Mirror Adhesive. Key point: must thoroughly clean glass. IIRC IPA/Acetone worked well. Also key: set in place and hold stationary. Mark glass on outside so you know exactly where you will put the pad on the inside glass surface. You want to: clean meticulously, apply the adhesive per instructions, and then push and hold the pad (I did it with mirror attached) stationary for 1 to 2 minutes to let the bond set without the pad squirming around.

After you have tried all of the combinations of adhesives and you hopefully haven't cracked the windshield, go to a Porsche dealer and buy the original adhesive rectangular pad. 901 731 133 20
$10.19 still listed in the Porsche PET. The original mirror has a large base almost a rectangle but it is too big for the glues to work well. The surface of the base of the mirror must be perfectly clean and flat. 1000 grit on a piece of glass. Mark your spot, clean the glass, peel one side of he pad and put the pad on the mirror first take the paper off of the other side and press it to the glass firmly (not too hard) hold it for a minute or two and your done. Glass should be at a reasonable temperature. You may want to buy two pads just in case. Good Luck.

This is the proper way. I once used generic clear epoxy add when the weather turned cold the mirror mount cracked the inner pane of the windshield.

Thanks for suggestion. I see the part number for sale on Pelican. It looks red. Does that peel off I assume leaving a black surface? The rectangular part that mounts to windshield has the prior black mounting pad, still in good shape, just not sticking. Do I need to remove that completely before installing the new pad? It seems really really attached to the mounting base. Also, can I mount the mirror with it attached to the base, or will the weight mess me up. I already mounted using epoxy. Now my two issues are: I'm scared reading here about cracked windshields, and, from the outside of car you can see the quarter size ring of the epoxy. It looks kind of tacky! Thanks

If the pad is original your in good shape. You can forget about sanding the surface. When you get the pads if my memory serves there is a green and red paper peel off. Some folks say it matters which side goes to the glass, I never found it made a difference. And you don't need to use two pads one will do it. Start by cleaning the old epoxy from the glass with a razor blade after you mark the outside with masking tape where you want the mirror. Clean the inside with alcohol. Peel the old pad off and scrape what won't peal with a plastic scraper, careful not to gouge the metal surface, easy to do with a razor blade. When you are done you'll notice that the pad surface has a slight ridge around the outer edge if no one has played with it before. If it's not there then you have to be sure the surface is smooth and flat. Clean the surface with alcohol and peel one side of the paper and apply the pad, smooth it out so you don't have any bubbles in it. If you have a pal around to share a beer with have them gently press down on the masking tape from the outside, peel the paper off and stick the mirror on the glass pressing for a minute or two. That should do it. You don't need to separate the mirror stem from the mount but I would check the screw attachment to see if it is loose before mounting it. Good Luck.

Thanks again, sorry to beat a dead horse here. So the hardened black old pad can remain with the new pad going over it? It's on there so hard, it would be a real bear to try and get it removed, leaving a smooth surface for the new pad.
