915 Input Shaft Seal Installation in Guide Tube
 

Dear Pelicans,

In which side should a new input shaft seal be pressed into a 915 guide tube? From the A side or B side indicated below?

Gearbox is a 1983 915.

Also any other tips on installing the new seal? Install dry or lube?

Hi,i have a tool which is marked how deep the seal should go .I do it from the A side.Actually if look closely there is a end lip to which the seal should go to or ended up at...B full-arrow end on the pic...

Hi Ivan,

I just removed my old guide tube and seal (which look probably original) and it was installed from the A-side. You are right it was right up against the lip and the end of the B arrow. I was just confused because the Bentley manual only states "press out old seal, press in new seal" and no other details. Also the original photo above (before I added the red arrows and text) kind of make it seem like the seal should be installed from the B side.

If it goes in from the A-side, that is a really long distance to drag the seal surface along the bore of the guide tube. Do you recommend some kind of lubricant?

I have never used any lube there to install it..maybe some other boys do i would not know.I have never seen a Bentley book.
First time i heard about it( i guess here), it sounded funny to me Bentley tell us how to work on Porsche;-)

ps.
do not worry about the installation just make sure you are going strait in.I have a pipe which has a inner diameter as the tube for installation.
And one more thing , do not forget to replace the tiny o ring!! very important...also lube the tube on outside too for the TO bearing to slide nicely on it.I use Sachs lube...

Pack the inside of the seal with grease, which is done to help make sure the "gaiter" stays in place. The gaiter is the metal spring loop. Smear a little grease on the outside of the seal to help it slide into position and avoid catching / cutting the seal's rubber surface.
