Liquid Moly MoS2
I'm curious to know if anybody is using Liquid Moly MoS2 as an additive to engine oil in their air cooled 911s
I'm currently using Rotella T4 and I am contemplating using Liquid Moly as an additive. Any thoughts? Thx |

I am fairly familiar with MOS2. An engineer from GE explained to me how molybdenum works. He told me that if you look at metal surfaces under a microscope you would find that they are never perfectly smooth and that molybdenum fills those imperfections. I tend to believe this because I’ve used it successfully in treating noisy hydraulic lifters in my watercooled VWs, I think the moly fills the imperfections enough to allow the old lifters to pump up to eliminate the noise.
Personally, I would not hesitate to use MOS2 in my cars and I have used it in most of my cars over the years. Be aware, though, that when you add this to your oil it will make it look dirty.

Thank you Matt, that's the answer I've been hoping to get.
I've read good stuff about that product so I'll be adding some to my oil. I think the manufacturers recommend about 500ml per oil change but I think I'll go with 300ml as that's the size container I have. Should work. Thx |

I have been using Liqui Moly MoS2 for the past 3 years in all my cars, including a 3.2 Carrera. I enjoy smoother, quieter engines.
The correct amount is 5% of the oil capacity. In a 3.2 Carrera that is about 2 300mL bottles. Do not overfill your total oil level.

Moly disulfide gives metal a plating action that is used as an extreme pressure lubricant modifier. It is commonly used as an assembly lube for cams (because of its extreme pressure properties) and as a break-in lubricant. The "plating action" of moly is also know to plug up filters but that doesn't make a huge difference when you are going to change the oil in a short time when you are breaking in a motor.
Oil and its additive package are a crafted balance that is all designed to work together. Adding 'more' without a chemist with a laboratory behind it isn't that good of an idea unless there is someone with a huge quantity data behind them making that determination. The aircooled 911 motor does have unique needs that make a lot of regular oils a bad choice but if you are going to select an oil I would ask what people who are supporting hundreds or thousands of 911 motors are recommending: Dave at TRE, Steve at Rennsport Systems, John Walker, Charles at LN Engineering, etc. I can't recall any of them ever recommending an oil plus an additive after break-in. Every recommendation I recall has been in the vein of a 20w50 from Brad Penn (now Penn Grade), Valvoline VR1, Royal Purple, Kendall, etc. I have to say that any oil recommendation that comes from having experience with one engine that happens to have not failed isn't saying much. If you don't have a huge number of engines to work with or at least oil analysis to work from it just isn't science. (But after all that, I would have to say that if you put in a moly additive 50 miles before an oil change you would have the plating benefits without screwing with the filter and the additive package.)

Thank you for your comments Quicksilver .
At this point I am somewhat undecided which direction to go. Does a plugged oil filter manifest itself with higher oil pressures? How does one determine if the oil filter is plugging up? Thx |

I just switched to Liqui Moly 10w60 and MoS2 for my 3.2 Carrera, you can't honestly tell the wear level, but I like the idea of a thinner oil on startup, and I've also heard good things about MoS2 from people I've asked. I'm happy with it so far, the car starts and idles smoother. If in two years, my oil consumption hasn't really changed then I'll know

I change oil at 3000 miles or one year, Whichever is less, and have not found any indication of higher oil pressures due to adding Liqui Moly MoS2.
