Distributor woes update... (3.6 SC project)

I got home tonight and switched coil wires. Motor starts and runs as before. (Badly). At least I know that the problem is with the coil and not the distributor (big relief).

Question: How badly would you expect a 993 motor to run if it receives spark from only one set of plugs?

Bill Verburg 03-17-2003 06:45 PM

Badly and w/ potentially expensive consequences.

I think I read that they use dual plugs to ignite both sides of the dome piston, which allows the high comperession on pump gas. if you take six plugs away it should be down on power, 30 percent at least but i dont know the math on this. becarefull because when the distributor belt breaks it causes havic , recheck your belt, Kevin

How do you know that?

If your dist belt is broken, swapping coils will still send spark down the good plug wires, it will just come from the other coil.

Do you have a timing light? If so, start clipping it on different plug wires to see if it flashes.

Moses just take one of the distributor caps off and like down inside you will see the belt, Kevin

or you could remove the secondary dist. cap and try to turn the rotor. If its turns, the belt is broken.

Essentially the motor will run with a single coil wire connected from coil #1 to EITHER distributor. Connecting a single coil wire from coil #2 to either distributor will not allow motor to run.

Have you tried testing the energizer connections that plug into the coil that allowsthe motor to run? If both energizers allow the car to run with the one "good" coil you can narrow it down to the bad coil.

I'll check that when I get home tonight. Thanks.

igniter

hallo paul
I think you are talking about the Igniters on the Coil Bracket ?
On the 993 you dont have those . You have one beside the Motronic under the Seat and it controls Both Coils .
I would check now the Power on the Coils . You have power on both contacts of each Coil . Check from there to the Motronic ,where you find 2 Pins deliver the Power to the Coils .
Moses
If you are not really sure about electrics go to a good mechanic ,
if you destroy the Motronic on your Car you will not find on Statesside and you have to have one shipped from here ,since the Dollar is low and this things hard to find ,a very expensive
mistake . You destroy the Motronic in a second if you short it out .
Dont ask me how i know !?

"Ignitors" that what they're called. Sort of like "energizers". Well if the 993 doesn't have them you cant check them. Sorry. Do what Harald says. Unfortunatly being one of the first to go with the 993 Variram conversions has it drawbacks.

Moses, sent you a PM.

hallo
Todd Embs has a Varioram as well , and i think his is running now . I am not sure if it is the same year ,maybe you can cross check with him on the Wiring , it seems that you have something not connected ( Drive block deleted for both Coils ? )
