74 911 Targa Electrical problem

I installed a new ignition switch in this car and when I reconected the battery the horns go off with a consentent blast.

I have moved all the wiring and reinstalled the ignition switch with no change.

When I remove the relay the horn stopped and the car will start.

Any suggestions?

Well,

you have somehow shortened the wire to the horn pad to ground. Maybe it got pinched during the install?

Thanks, I did pull the steering wheel to aid in the ign install.
so all of the wires are free and not grounded.

i would assume the pin switch in the wheel is hitting. take the switch out and tape up the wire . see if she blows then. did it make you jump when you hooked up the battery?

i still would bet a dollar on the lonley wire on the horn switch. the insulation might be worn on that wire.

swap the horn relay with the hi/low headlight relay. see if the relay has fused at the points.

if you are buying parts.
the rubber grommet has aged poorly on the 72. check yours. i am also using the 914 steering wheel without the hub so i have to use the shorter switch. there are two sizes.

That is a great ideal, Thanks for the hint. Is the horn relay, the round black relay that is in the fuse box? If so I have swapped it with a new one with no change.

what year is the car? you might unplug the wheel harness (i'm not sure if the horn wire is in there) to see if the short to ground is in the wheel.

my relay is by the batteries up front, but i have 'give them a slight coranary' air horns.
