Control arm compatibility: Long hoods to short hoods

I've got some play in my ball joints. Born in '71 so I'm sure they will be very difficult to remove. Found some control arms from a '80s Carrera with low miles with ball joints on it. Thinking to just swap out the control arms instead of messing with the ball joints. Are they compatible? Thanks!!!

Up to and including '71 the bottom of the strut was held onto the ball joint with a pinch bolt.

From '72 on, the ball joint was anchored to the strut with a wedge bolt.

From '72 on the ball joint and struts are different than the older ones. Meaning older struts must match with older style ball joints.

So you either have to update your struts, which is a good idea IMO or back date your ball joints.
