Anyone use chromelondon.com for OEM radio
 

Was searching for period correct radio for my 1983 and came across this company. Looks like they restore the radio and add mp3 and Bluetooth capabilities

A little pricey but sounds like it’s worth the money rather than buying old junk off eBay

Anyone buy a radio from them?

I had great luck with this guy, he converted a 993 unit for my '84. I think he knows, repairs and stocks the old stuff as well. Also pricey but solid.

Is 1983 a Monterey?

No. I have a modern alpine in there now 12 years. Looking for options that will look more period correct.

I have purchased a radio from them. They provide an excellent product. They will even make sure you have the correct style knobs for your year.

I sent the original Blaupunkt Porsche CR radio from my 80 SC Targa to chromelondon in the summer of 2017. At the time it did not work at all. I got it back a few weeks later and it worked like a charm (though I haven't tried using the cassette deck ;) ). I had them add Bluetooth so I could listen to Spotify and ostensibly make calls.

Bluetooth works like a charm for Spotify though I have never been able to get the mic to work well enough to actually make calls. A year and a half later I'm starting to hear more crackle in the radio and it seems like the radio isn't holding onto the stations as well.

As I've used it now for a while, I'm also starting to get frustrated with the radio's basic functionality. For instance, there are no station memory buttons and a one way seek - meaning that once you decide you want to look for something different to listen to, you have to go all the way through the dial to get back to where you started.

So, given that - the repair may seem to be starting to fail and the frustrations of 1980 technology, I'm seriously considering installing a modern radio with period correct looks - the "new" Blaupunkt mentioned above, probably more likely the Continental radio that is also discussed in the forums, not the Porsche Classic ($1200 is just too much, especially considering I won't use the navigation part of it).

I like my Continental a lot. I’ve got some nice Focals and a sub - it’s all pretty good sounding but the weakest link in the sound chain might be the headunit.

Once someone can do a comprehensive review of the new Blau, I’ll consider buying it. I just want my stuff to sound a tad better

If your talking about the kienzle, is saw that. Looks nice. But was concerned about the FM reception noted in the thread

Btw, I read maybe on Rennlist, that kienzle makes the continental radios. Not sure how accurate that is

I purchased my Bamberg from them....excellent communication, fair price and service. I wouldn’t hesitate buying or servicing from them again.

I’m pretty sure this is the case for both headunits with the Continental and the VDO names.

Btw, FM and AM Continental reception with the OEM Porsche automatic antenna in my 84 is excellent.
