Mystery: Help me Identify My Car

I know there are lots of people on this board that love when this stuff comes up.

It was my understanding that my car was a 1975 911S. At least that is what it says on the inside of the door. Anyways I gave my engine number (6550822) to someone and they said they came up with wierd results. They said that it was a late style case 1975 1/2, but that it was comming up with some weird info on this number and that it looked like a factory carrera? Can someone help me solve this mystery because I obviously don't have the resources that many of you have available. I can give you any other info you need, just let me know?

Thanks ahead of time,

I dont have my engine number book with me but on your vin,.. What is your 5th digit of your vin? It should read 9115"2" if its an S model. 1= regular 911, 2=911s US, 3=911s ROW, 4=Carrera US, 6=Carrera ROW, 7=Turbo.

Yes my VIN starts with 9115 which tells me that the car was at least orginally a 911S. But why would this differ from the engine id. When I removed the cylinders I learned they were Mahle and not KS (I expected KS from what I had read) and they were extremely new. The PO told me that a rebuild was done a while ago but I was skeptical because she had every reciept for the car except the rebuild receipt. Is there any chance the engine got swapped out at one point???

But what is the 5th digit? 9115 means it a 1975 911.

looks like a 911/84 which was built between aug.75 and july 76.
A 2.7L with all the california smog goodies, 160 hp, 162 torq. but you can double check if you have a mag. (2.7) or an aluminum (3.0) case

I have a similar situation - 1975 S Targa 911521XXXX
Door pillar sticker: Manufactured 11/74

Unmolested car - in the family all along - 45K miles
California all along - The thermal reactors are missing. Hmmmm.

The Red Book shows that the engine should be:
6450001 - 6452440 (911/43)

My engine number reads very close to yours: 6550728
not exactly in the Red Books range

Got my Cardex today ($110 plus $5.95 S & H for 70's cars though they dont's give you the "Born on Date" or the MSRP.)

Transmission matches but they list the engine as "47N277"

Could anyone let the two of us 655XXXX engine owners know what we have under the hood?

Looks like 655xxxx just means it has the California engine.

This thread started me thinking...

My VIN is 91163XXXXX, meaning a 911, '76, RoW "S". I could never remember the breakdown of it all.

Adam,

My VIN is also a "91163"...but my car is only a 911 and not an "S". Did they offer a RoW "S" that year? Or was that a US only thing? (sorry, I don't have any reference stuff at work...)

Thanks emcon5 - the table is just what I needed! What is the source? - definately more detail than the Red Book.

What is the "SPM" in the Table??
It is interesting that the most powerful engine in this table is the "911 Carrera 2.7" The Red Book says that the 911/83 is the Carrera engine.

So - my California emmisions engine has a 655XXX number as appropriate. The engine is listed as a Carrera - but the KW (power) is in the same range as the 911S

I'll have to ask the CARDEX people for clarification (they offer to make corrections - so much for being the ultimate source)

I couldn't tell you. I found them on the web (that is my story, and I am sticking to it). I stuck them on my Rennlist page for future reference though.

Sportomatic.

It is. ROW Carreras still had the RS MFI engine. US Carreras had the same engine as the 911s, which is really the only model we got. When the chart says
"911s Carrera (USA) (CDN)" read it as "911s, Carrera (USA) (CDN)"

As it should be, they had the same engine in USA.

Hope this helps,

Tom

Certificate Correction - Are they reading the Board

I just got this E-Mail from the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity person in Georgia in response to my fax asking about the wierd engine number listed on my Certificate- see above post. I blinded (655XXXX) the number when I wrote her to reassure myself that they didn't just agree with my offered number. Now I realize that I gave the whole number on my earlier post here - perhaps they are reading!

From Porshe:
> You are correct; the engine number of you car is 6550728. It was a simple
> typo, and I will be glad to send you a corrected Certificate at no
> additional charge.
> I apologize for this error.
