RHD Pedal Cluster Rebuild
My car was converted by the previous owner to RHD. He did a hack job at best. I decided to tear up the rubbish homemade carpet he installed and see what was underneath. Glad I did, because this horrible mess needs some attention! Sadly all the work he did on this car was to a similar standard. So, I've spent the last 2 years fixing it all like the wiring harness. Ugh.
So, here is what I'm working with... firstly the hacked tunnel: Obviously he just got the angle grinder out and hacked away. I'd like to neaten this up - at the very least, weld up the daggy bits where we over cut. The section along the bottom of the tunnel isn't smooth either. It needs to be ground down for neatness. Have a look at this one. It's a home made clutch return spring. Probably because an actual Porsche return spring for RHD works out to be about $100AUD by the time it's shipped, etc. I cut this one, so I'll be forking out for a correct one unfortunately. I have the reciept for all the body panels he purchased from Porsche for the RHD conversion - I couldn't see the RHD footwell part on the list. So, I wonder what he did here. Maybe he got one from a wreckers... I doubt it. The pedal box was obviously sitting too low, so it was sitting on some flat bar steel. Not welded onto it or anything, just sitting on it. The cluster was bolted to the floor though. I'm thinking I'm going to wire wheel this whole section back to bare metal. See what he's done under there and then rust treat and POR15. Underneath looks similar to this mess. Is there any factory information that I can refer to to determine where the pedals need to actually sit? Any measurements? Does it even matter that much, as long as everything works correctly? How many fibre washers do you think you need? Apparently this many..... I'm not sure what's supposed to go here, maybe a spacer... I'll have to wait and see and compare to the PET - if I can find a RHD PET. He must have run out of fibre washers, because here we have steel washers as spacers: What do you do if something doesn't fit properly? Drill more holes and cut some bits off, of course!! I'm thinking I need to strip the whole thing... I dont have a sandblaster, but might be a good time to buy one. Then give it all a new coat of paint too. Stay tuned for more hackyness. ![]() I don't understand why he needed to cut the bracket which sits on the LH passenger side and drill an extra hole in the bracket. Surely this fits on the regular RHD cars. I'm not sure what caused him to have it aligned so that it required cutting. I'm guessing I'm going to need to weld up the holes he has drilled and realign it all. If you get a sec, it would be awesome if you had any photos of your stripped back setup, it might be a good start for me to work out where to start. Thanks again! |
