Wideband air fuel

Since I'm having such an issue with my AEM wideband and they will not stand behind the defective unit. What brand do others on here use and how long have you has the unit in service?

I used to use AEM and once had to deal with their customer support folks. They took excellent care of me, so I am sorry to hear about your challenges.

A bunch of my racer friends and I have moved over to the Ballenger Motorsports AFR500. We were led by the folks at Reno Rennsport, who have about a half-dozen or more cars running these.

I have been very happy with the AFR 500 as have my friends. I use the production grade NTK sensor, and they use the calibration grade NTK sensor. We use NTK's because they appear to hold up longer with leaded fuels.

I did by an NTK sensor on Amazon for a back up, and I think it is counterfeit. So no more sensors from anyone but Ballenger.

I have spoken with them multiple times in the past year or so. Outstanding.

what are the problematic symptoms you are experiencing with the AEM unit? ive had them in two cars and they worked flawlessly. was the bung at the header set up high enough to not be fouled by moisture at cold start ups?

im curious to hear what the fly in the ointment has been??

The first unit would only read in the 14's, never saw rich or lean. They said it was repaired by replacing the heating element unit. Then it came back and would not read proper air fuel mixture until it was running several minutes, which by then my cold start time frame I was trying to diagnose was over.

Wideband Cleaning

Before you buy a complete new unit - you may want to consider trying to clean the wideband sensor.

I have an Innovate LM-2 that was going through tailpipe sensors about once a year ( ~ $65 ish / per).

After getting fed up with buying new sensors, and considering removing the wideband altogether - I looked online and found that some people extend the life of O2 sensors by soaking them in gasoline for a week or so (partially submerged - soaking in fuel).

I gave it a shot with one of my old sensors that had crapped out and was causing incorrect readings. After soaking in fuel and reinstalling, the sensor worked like new.

Not sure what kind of issues you are having with your wideband - but soaking the sensor in gasoline may be worth a shot.

Good luck, Gordo

Thanks for the advice, but in this case the gauge itself is bad. System works perfectly with new gauge. Just can't get AEM to get this one fixed correctly or replaced.

I have one made by 14point7. No free air calibration necessary and has worked flawlessly.

AEM has finally decided to replace the gauge. Hopefully it will work without fault.

good. i have bad experience with inovate (sensors going out...takes minutes to warm up, etc...) , good experience with AEM...

in a couple of weeks time, i'm doing a dyno session, we will see how accurate the AEM is. I will report.
