flares
How do you butt weld flares any pictures of the process.
My panel beater is not familiar with the process. I have done a search but I still cannot picture the process in my mind as far as the welding is concerned. What kind of welding is used and what exactly is warping of the metal ? any pictures would be greatly appreciated . If i screw them on and cut the old ones out can any welder just weld them on (inside and out) ? Can you use SC off cut's which were converted to turbo's ? |

Do a search. You will find plenty of info. From what I understand the prefered method is to use a bonding material ,but I have not tried it on steel. I have used it on a 240z (5 years ago)which got the entire quater panels replaced with fiberglass flared units and it has not given any trouble yet. The bodyman that suggested it to me called it "vettebond" but thats not what it was labeled as . I forgot the name. Im sure there`s even better stuff now.

My flares were bonded about 6 years ago with no problems since. There was a thread few weeks ago with pics and links. A search should turn it up. If your "panel beater" is not familiar with the process of welding flares, then I wouldn't let him learn on your car.

I agree with IROC. Any panel beater should know how to weld and the differences between a butt weld and a lap weld are from welding 101. You may want to find another source.
I also have some picts on my site of when I welded the flares on my 71 project. MIG welds are typically used, although TIG and torch/hammer welding are very acceptable practices in the right hands. warping occurs when there is too much heat applied to an area and it warps, creating a wavy, stretched surface. Very hard to shrink back to original. Jamie

Has any one personally used that 3M bonding adhesive to attach steel flares !
That seems like the easiest way ! I want to steer away from fibreglass. |
