Automatic antenna failure.

Hi,

I currently have my door and fender off for paint and decided to look into why my antenna no longer operates, its been like this for about 10 years.
I traced the blue power cable with the inline fuse to where it comes through the fire wall under the dash, there i found it coiled up with a cable tie and cut about 0.5m after the inline fuse.
I connected a length of wire to it and ran it to the battery, hey presto it works.
My question is this what can I connect it into now to give it a live feed.

Thanks in advance

The antenna should go up/down when you turn the radio on/off, so the best place to connect it is to the 12V antenna turn-on wire in the radio's wiring harness. That's probably where you'll find the other end of the blue wire.

Even with the temporary feed from the battery it still went up and down when i switched the radio on and off.
I'll remove the radio tomorrow and look for the other end.

Thanks

Had another look under the dish and found a loose live feed with an unused straight connector on it.
Popped in the blue cable and everything works fine.

If you can locate the white wire - that can be used as a switched connection. Your radio probably has a 12V input spade connection in the back, with a pin terminal output, for the white lead. So the antenna is a 'switched' connection.
I rewired my auto antenna up to a small aircraft rocker in the console so I can control the up/down.

Bill, thanks some good information there for controlling the antenna on|off.
The feed I found was coming off the light switch and works a treat, I dont mind it going up and down with the radio on off switch, thats what I was looking for.
Thanks.

There should be an empty male terminal on your headlight switch. That is where it is connected on my 930 from factory.

Yeah, I found it. I must have disconnected it a long time ago when I replaced my turn signal switch.
Thanks

If you use that terminal, you would be wise to install an inline fuse on the live antenna lead.
On the 77, the headlight switch is not fused.

I went directly to the fuse panel in the frunk.

I just didn't want the antenna going up/down every time I got gas, ran into the store, pulled into the garage, stalled etc. etc. and this seemed the perfect time to do a remote switch.
YMMV

I'll add in the in-line fuse as you say, what size of fuse would you use.

I went with a 14 amp flag type.
Probably over-kill - no problem so far; 10 amp should be sufficient.
