California Bill SB 708
See the following info:
Please write to your State Senator and request their NO vote on SB 708 March 24, 2003 Please note that the California Senate is voting on Senate Bill 708 tomorrow. If this bill passes, it will reverse the smog exemption which we achieved from the passing of SB42 a few years ago. I have sent an attachment_of a letter that I sent to my local state senator. I urge each of you to write a similar letter and send it to your respective senator. We MUST do everything possible to get this bill, SB708, stopped dead in its tracks. From: "Clyde Madsen" To: Subject: SB 708 Date: Mon, 24 Mar 2003 09:52:16 -0800 Dear Senator Ackerman: The purpose of this note is in regards to Senate Bill 708. I am a resident of Laguna Niguel and a collector of vintage motor cars. I am also very well integrated within a number of Car Clubs including the National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS), the Cobra Owners Club of America (COCOA) and Porsche Club of America (PCA). I am_most upset with Senator Florez' latest attempt to blame the collector car_industry for California's inability to meet mandated smog levels. It is_expected that this bill will reach the Senate floor tomorrow for a vote. I_and the members of the respective car clubs I am a member of,_urge you to vote "NO" in this ill-advised bill. As a collector car hobbyist, one of my true joys in life is the restoration and preservation of our automobile heritage. Billions of dollars flow through the economy via thousands of businesses that support_this popular and growing industry. Strangling this entire industry with_unfair and unnecessary smog regulations is yet another nail in the coffin_of the California economy. Collector cars are not only the best maintained automobiles on the road,_but are the least-driven of all cars. Most of my friends are "car people",_professionals who work hard at salaried jobs in anticipation of a weekend_of fun with friends and our prized classic cars. We gather almost weekly_at car shows and cruises all up and down the State. Most such cars are_driven less than 1,000 miles annually. My current concourse-prepared 1967_427 Corvette, and it's companion 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350 are shown virtually every weekend at a charitable car show_somewhere in Southern California. These cars, and the thousands like it_that are driven, shown and enjoyed every weekend are NOT the "gross_polluter's" Senator Florez targets. To be sure, there are "gross_polluter's" on our highways. We see them every day, especially in Orange County, with dented fenders, missing bumpers,_broken tail lamps and smoke spewing from the exhaust. Those_cars should be the target of our smog laws, not the classics that are_restored to near-new or concourse condition and lovingly maintained by_their dedicated owners. Some of these classics, especially the "Muscle_Cars" of the late '60's and early '70's have large engines that do not_meet today's more stringent Smog II regulations, and cannot be made to_comply at any cost. SB 708 would relegate these classics to the scrap heap or museums, and put an end to a huge industry in California. The effect on_businesses all around the country would be catastrophic. SB 708 will_negate our hard-fought victory of SB 42 a few years back, which prevented_the Smog II regulations from automatically failing all old cars, even with_proper smog equipment installed. Again, these cars are driven only a few miles annually. This bill is_punitive to a very large collector car hobby that is only a very small contributor to the smog problem in California. I urge you to reject this latest attempt to put a Band-Aid on the larger_smog problem. Please vote NO on SB 708! Thank you for your support.
